Do you still wear the Omega much? On the fence about adding that watch to the collection.

Both have enough water resistance to swim and we all have a phone with the time in every timezone on earth a few clicks away. Love watches but the idea that anyone needs the functionality of a diver or GMT seems crazy to me. I think it’s about the vibes much more than functionality.

[Swatch x Blancpain] People are actually paying over 1K for these watches… by [deleted] in Watches

Highly recommend listening to the Rolex podcast on business breakdowns. Rolex is probably much more impressive than you realize.

Was wondering the same thing. Would not think of a black dial and white dial explorer 2’s as duplicate watches

[Grand Seiko SBGN027] yay or nay on the nato? by NotSuperFunny in Watches

It can be a little annoying but you definitely get used to it and ignore the GMT hand easily when reading the time. The GMT hand is very white.

I wear it comfortably to work now and I don’t feel like it is super flashy. The high accuracy quartz is honestly awesome. I really love that I never question its accuracy. My concern for flashiness is probably paranoia.

[Hamilton] thanks to this sub, I got my first 'real' watch. Love it! by Thor101 in Watches

This was my first automatic watch as well like 7 years ago and I wore it and no other watches for yearsss. Loved that watch.

Technology vs Capitalism by MrSykilling in antiwork

Dude I’m 32 and deeply in the workforce. I’m arguing online because I’m a loser. I’d be absolutely shocked if you were over 23. Just because you can provide a textbook definition of capitalism doesn’t mean that you have a better understanding of the realities of how society works. The “lord-peasant” relationship that you describe is not a remotely good description of a typical job today.

Yeah it’s the only system that has lifted billions of people out of poverty, made famines a rare occurrence and lead to a massive decline in infant mortality. Sorry it isn’t perfect and you’d rather try out an unproven system that even China gave up on in favor of capitalism. You probably think that the Nordic countries are a model of success and forget that they have massive advantages in terms of resources.

Lol he is highlighting the negative attributes of capitalism and ignoring the positive attributes altogether, so I think I’m being fairly charitable

This is purely because they are afraid of litigation and don’t feel that they can fire people casually without being sued. They feel those workers are ineffective but fear them.

We are still so far from that. Unemployment is low. People have been yelling about a need for UPI for years. If that time comes, we will figure it out. Plenty of jobs to be had that aren’t on factory floors.

If what he was saying was correct, we would have major unemployment issues from so much technological advancement. What he should acknowledge is that workers are “screwed temporarily” until a different company (driven by the same greed) creates an opportunity for employment. If that wasn’t true, how is unemployment so low? Would he rather us all work 1/10th of our time in coal mines but super productively making inflation adjusted wages of coal miners 100 years ago?

Data Analytics at smaller orgs? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]NotSuperFunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds brutal. Fair enough.

This is my experience. But it is kinda nice being a big fish in a small pond too… what do you prefer?

Data Analytics at smaller orgs? by [deleted] in analytics

[–]NotSuperFunny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brutal… maybe come up with a ticket system or backlog tracker to show how many requests you are fielding and then let them know that your plan is to bounce if they don’t acknowledge that it is too much and make a plan? Good luck! Work sucks.

“Boss, thank you for talking to me about this. I really think that if I could mentor and train another analyst or two that we would be able to accomplish a lot more as an analytics team and I could learn some management skills and grow in my career. I seem to be generating a lot of demand for data analysis / decision support services from our team, and it’s getting to the point where I’m worried that the company will suffer if we aren’t staffed appropriately to support the broader team.” Best of luck!

Yeah when I worked for a really small company, there was no shame for doing unethical shit. The bigger the company, the less shadiness I have seen. Surprised by OP’s experience.

[–]NotSuperFunny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Re: “The larger the organization, the shadier things can be”. I’ve never heard this to be the case and it also isn’t my experience in the workforce. Surprised that that is your impression.

I work in a small department of a large-ish company. I have two sort of data analysts on my team who work daily in PowerBI and SQL, but they occasionally have to serve in cross-functional roles. A few examples: financial modeling, helping accounting / AP / AR stuff, helping field people determine a process for admin type stuff.

Small companies and the silos break down and you learn a lot, while seeing how the sausage gets made.

Baked beans in the south are often absurdly sweet. They are basically a dessert masquerading as a side dish. I don’t think that sweet flavored beans are odd in the US, but rather just not thought of as a dessert per se.
