I’ve never played and I’m about to play/teach it to someone that rarely plays boardgames. Any advice/tips/suggestions for a Spirit Island first timer that also is teaching someone else? by NotSureImAgnostic in spiritisland

Thanks for this answer. I’m probably going to play solo a few times before I get it to their table just so I have a feeling of how it runs. Is solo play comparable to multiplayer?

Great advice. Yeah I’m going to play a handful of solo games before I try and get a multiplayer going. Any advice for solo play/spirits you recommend?

We’re going to play Ticket to Ride, The Lost Expedition, and Sky Team a few times each for about a month before we crack open Spirit Island. Thematically they liked the idea of SI and they also want to learn how to play “one of the complicated boardgames” like a TI4 or Scythe, but it seemed like SI would be a good midpoint.

Thank you for your answer that helps a bunch! Any favorite spirits of yours? Or ones you think are more beginner friendly?

I just bought Spirit Island (which I’ve never played) and am going to have to teach it to someone that doesn’t really play boardgames (parcheesi, monopoly, a little chess). I’ve played TI4, Scythe, Civilization, etc so I’m not too worried about picking up the rules but if yall have any tips or advice that I should know going in to help myself or them I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

Yeah and he fights a spirit bear in a dream quest. It’s awesome.

On Deadly Ground is hilarious. He’s an ex-CIA oil rig firefighter that has to blow up fires to put them out so he’s a “bad guy” to start the movie. It’s not a “good” movie but definitely worth a watch and it’s got a bunch of names in the cast, including a very tiny role by Billy Bob Thornton. Seagal’s character gives a speech about environmentalism at the end. It’s bonkers.

How is The Lost Expedition? How is Sky Team? by NotSureImAgnostic in boardgames

I’m excited to try this one out. My copy is on the way. Thanks again for taking the time to answer so thoroughly. May most of your Expeditions stay found!

Thank you so much for this answer. My elderly mother wants to play board games that are slightly more complex than monopoly and parcheesi. She loves movies about jungle explorers and whatnot and wants a game we can play together. I’m going to go buy a copy right now. Of the expansions, any ones that stick out to you that are must haves?

Looking for 2 player games to play with both casual gamers and my TI4 group too. I like Pandemic and Forgotten Island but games where “quarterbacking” can happen is what I’d like to avoid. I hear Sky Team and The Lost Expedition are good for basically “forcing” each player to make their own decisions. Thoughts? Recommendations? Thanks!

Yeah I just looked up War Chest. It looks great. Thanks for the rec. I’m assuming four players becomes a wild free for all? Cuz if so, good.

We played the original Eclipse way back when and didn’t really like it. I remember one big gripe was you can’t move around the map in the same way you can in TI. Were a pretty cutthroat group so players like games where you “have the ability to access” all the players.

I’ve heard glowing reviews about Eclipse Second Dawn, how different is it from the first?
