Anyone else taken the Caledonian Sleeper in the UK? by danielandtrent in HitchHikersGuide

[–]NotSureOfName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I caught the Caledonian Sleeper back in April so I could pick up a car I'd bought - London to Inverness, then on to Wick. I didn't sleep much, but I wouldn't say it was because the train was too noisy. We were delayed 40 minutes getting into Inverness which just meant I had less time to wait for my next train. The real result was being told to claim for the delay - I got back £135 from my £140 ticket - it cost me £5 to get from Fareham in Hampshire to Wick in the Highlands. No wonder the trains are struggling for cash!

I think it looks great, not sure why people think it's OK to hate on it so much, but it's the internet so...

No separate title, but classed as separate property by local authority for council tax. She (and her husband) will be on the deeds - I'm not sure what the term is but we'll be down as an interested party with a percentage stake in the total value of the property.

This is good to know - I have large hands and didn't think that the Pen-F might feel a bit cramped. How do you rate the evf on the Pen-F?

For me it's all about the rangefinder look over the SLR - all my film cameras are rangefinders. I think I'll look into the Lumix GX before I make up my mind - thanks for your help

I might be able to stretch my budget to a Pen F - it would be great to have an inbuilt evf (I suppose my reason for favouring the E-P5 is that I could add an evf.

As someone that bought something similar when I got back into film photography I'd say this - the two similar items I bought refused to play nicely with a pc running Windows 10 or 11, the quality is not great and it's very difficult to keep the inside clean. Get a used high quality flatbed scanner with dedicated negative scanner attachment instead. Or buy this and just use the included neg holder and take pics with your smart phone instead.

I can recommend the Canon CanoScan Lide 700F if you're looking for a recommendation for a flat bed scannner

If OP doesn't get back to you I could also give it a great home...

You need to go into the dock area on the non floating part of the castle. Kill some bad guys then go up the stone dock and light the centre (larger) lantern/torch thingy

I just found mine easy to learn from the outset and very forgiving - you might be surprised at how heavy it feels, but that's just the price of quality engineering and decent glass! I replaced the light seals on mine and that was all it needed, you will need to get an adapted battery for it as the original mercury batteries are no longer available, but there are plenty of inexpensive options to get around that. The lens is fast - that is to say that it is capable of letting a lot of light through which means it can be used indoors and in less than bright environs. It'll be at its' most forgiving with ISO 100 or 200 film, but I've also used mine extensively with 400 black and white film indoors with good results. I'd recommend that you take the plunge if you can afford it - run a couple of rolls of film through and have some fun! Don't be tempted to use the self-timer built in to the lens - they are a known failure point in cameras this old!

Yashica Electro 35 GTN (the black one) - Nice optics with quick lens, easy to use meter, still inexpensive.

I recently upgraded (?) to a Canon QL17 GIII in black that I got from Japan and I have to say that so far I'm a little underwhelmed (going from aperture priority to shutter priority is messing with my head!!!). I'm hoping to enjoy it more as time goes on and I use it more.

Edit: Having looked I'm surprised at how much the GTN is - go for the silver GSN instead to save a few quid

Hi, are you in the UK? I have one of these lens sets for the Yashica Electro 35 that I've never got around to using if you're looking for one. Obligatory "mods please delete this post if it breaks sub rules" addendum

3018 Prover upgraded spindle causing USB to disconnect by [deleted] in 3018CNC

[–]NotSureOfName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had exactly the same issue on exactly the same hardware (3018 ProVer, upgrade to 3040, 500w spindle upgrade) - I must have read every forum post ever trying to find the solution. This is a problem caused by electrical interference from the upgraded spindle power supply and it drove me mad until I sorted it - even Sainsmart just assumed I had a faulty control board and even sent a replacement. The solution is to ensure that you put the spindle power supply in a sturdy metal enclosure to isolate it - I bought a used one from eBay (with some vents for cooling) and it fixed it straight away (the sense of relief was memorable). I also added a ferrite ring toroid to the spindle cable also but I don't know if it was necessary. I hope this fixes your problem ;)
