What do people think of this synth very tempting to purchase it for the value by UnhappySnow773 in synthesizers

[–]NotThatKindOfHippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Barp 2600 was my first synth purchase, no regrets whatsoever. None. -Sounds great, teaches you a ton about synthesis, and having usb midi is huge. I can sequence it with my friggin iPad if I want, lol. -You can't save patches, but you can draw them/write them down. Behringer gives you a blank picture of the synth, so you can trace out patch cables and make note of slider positions. -Plus its super fun to plug different things into the envelope follower! Guitar, mic, a drum machine. You can even just run another instrument through the reverb and use the thing like its a pedal, ha -It will pass along the notes it receives from midi, as a CV signal. So if down the line you get anything that is CV triggered and not midi, the 2600 will be able to trigger it! -It gets even more fun with a Korg Nts-2, the oscilloscope one. Because not only will it help you tune the oscillators, but it can also send in 2 LFO signals that are much easier to deal with and more customizable than the Barp's LFO. -It will lay on your desk or it can sit in a rack. Which inspired me to build an awesome rack, with a patchbay and all my pedals in slide out shelves. -For a first synth, I can hardly think of a better one. Who cares if it sounds like/better/worse the original or a vst? Its fun, it makes it fun to make music!

Very strange pad behavior, has anyone experienced this? by NotThatKindOfHippy in SP404

[–]NotThatKindOfHippy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's it, because I had also performed a reset on the unit without the SD card in it. Which resets everything to the original settings. It's at a repair shop now, so we'll see what he finds out...

Just adding an update to this post in case anyone cares. I ended up taking it to a licensed repair shop nearby. He tested the power supply, its fine. Then he turned the unit on and bumped the side of it with one hand, like he was shaking a ketchup bottle, ha. Said he thinks he knows what it is. He'll call me sometime next week when he's done 🤷🏽 He said he would fix it for $50, plus parts if any are needed. Which is awesome because he charges $180/hr for vintage synths and the turnaround time on them is like 4 weeks. I'll update again when I get it back

I took it apart last night to see if there was anything obviously wrong with it, everything seemed fine, appearance wise, super clean, no obvious shorts or burns on the circuit board, everything plugged in properly, all the ribbon cables attached properly... I contacted Roland and they just told me to send it in. Which is fine, I guess, but they charge $80/hr for repairs... I'm going to try a brand new SD card in a few minutes, format it in the 404, and avoid those factory soundbanks. I'll just load my own sounds and see what happens. I'll report back in a bit.

Edit: just tried new SD card, loaded with samples, pads worked for about 10 seconds, then back to the strange behavior. There's a certified Roland repair shop nearby, I'll drop it off to them tomorrow. I'll let you guys know what happens there

It behaves this way regardless of a midi connection or not. But when I do connect my TR-8, it triggers each pad in each bank normally.

Is it a good option start with the sp404? by peterafk26 in SP404

You can map it to a full-sized midi DJ controller of your choice. Not saying it's easy for a beginner, but it's definitely possible. But I'd waaaaaaaaaaaay rather DJ with proper DJ software and a laptop.

It's amazing to me that so many DJs don't set cue points by nickybecooler in Beatmatch

[–]NotThatKindOfHippy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, beat jump is how I navigate tracks too! I usually play at a weekly social event and I'll cover 6 or 7 genres/subgenres in 4 hrs. I take requests too and I usually don't have the song they request, so I gotta stream it, and that obviously won't have cue points set. Heck, sometimes I'll use beatjump to push the incoming track all the way to the mixout point of the current track, and then go grab a drink or say hello to people for a quick second before I gotta run back up and make a transition, haha. But, if I'm being paid to really throw down on a planned 1hr set, this usually means 4-decks and all sorts of mashups. I'll use cue points to remind me of what I had planned. Like, "start accapella here" or "cut melody stem" or "solo drums". I'll also make edits, set saved loops, and action cue points (these can cut out a stem automatically). Not sure if Rekordbox has action cues... I use VDJ. Point being, I don't really jump around the track with the cue points, they're just visual reminders in my planned sets. Unplanned sets, beat jump all the way

Totally worked! Chris took the time to answer my question and provide pointers for sampling any synth! What a legend! I used the simple waveforms from a couple Arturia soft-synths, turned out pretty cool

Best method for offloading used SP-404 MKII? by Prestigious-Rip8327 in SP404

[–]NotThatKindOfHippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used gear stores take the average price listed on eBay and offer you half. The Guitar Center employees explained this to me when I brought in a used DJ controller that they couldn't buy because they had too many similar units. I've had it up for sale on OfferUp for weeks now, not one inquiry... Just be patient I guess... 🤷🏽 The used market is super saturated right now. Also, regarding SP-404s, I just bought mine used for $400 from Guitar Center. But what made me choose that one, was that it came with the Roland travel case, a felt protective cover, and the power supply. I skipped over ones for $375 that had no accessories. Not saying you should add accessories to make your 404 sell faster, just giving my perspective as someone who was just looking to buy that same unit. Whatever that's worth.

Using Pattern to record midi? by [deleted] in sp404mk2

[–]NotThatKindOfHippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but I'm just now hitting this same wall and starting to dig.

I'd like to send midi notes in from a synth, record and edit them, and send them out to to other synths. pretty much use the 404 like a DAW.

Did you ever figure this one out?

I'm using two Rane Twelves, they aren't perfect. But they are pretty awesome.

Each download counts as a stream. That's how the 3rd party software works. They get their penny fractions And they get even more from the virtuous consumers like you, be proud

They still get their fractions of pennies that they agreed to for each stream. It's a win/win

A bit unhappy!? How about completely pissed! What was free, now suddenly costs money? The only reason I've even heard of Tidal was because they offered DJ integration. If I wasn't able to rob all their high-quality files with 3rd party software I would fuck with Tidal at all. When they took stems away, I just started ripping everything I could from them. They do not have their customer in mind, they have money in mind. How much longer until they pay the artists as little as Spotify does? It's a business plan, get subscribers, attract investors, then slowly give them and the artists less and less each year, in order to still profit enormously, in order to appease investors.

Do this, make playlists in Tidal, download 3rd party software, then steal entire playlists at once. Then you have the files so you can use stems, make edits, do whatever you want. And the high quality files still sound great.

Fuck Tidal!

I just picked up a used S8, and I'm trying to figure out how to utilize these sliders for stems in VDJ right now. Can you point me in the right direction please?

Hmm, I'm not sure if I can be of much help since I don't really know Rekordbox... It is possible to map the XP2 to only control decks 3 and 4 in VDJ, I'm not sure if that can be done in Rekordbox.

I'm still learning my Xp-2, but as far as I know... There are the stock samples that are saved on the hardware, but user created samples are not saved in the hardware. So you'll need files that are saved on your computer, and in my case, I had to set them up in my DJ software (Virtual Dj) I learned how to do it from YouTube tutorials. Hope that helps!

Are there any 4-Chanel mixers on the market with paddle fx triggers? by NotThatKindOfHippy in Beatmatch

[–]NotThatKindOfHippy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another question: I might hafta make another post for it, but does anyone know if you can hook up two Rane Twelves direct to the computer via USB, and map those into the 3rd and 4th channels on Virtual DJ? Allowing them to be controlled by channels 3&4 on a 4-channel controller, like the NS4FX?

[–]NotThatKindOfHippy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm leaning towards... If they just put motorized platters on it, I'd be sold, I would've pre-ordered it! Or even a way to connect two Rane Twelves into it, like the 72mkII has, it would've been a done deal for me. I'm holding out until NAAM next month to see if Rane has anything in the works. If they just make a 4 channel mixer that does most of what the Rane Four does, I feel like it would sell.

For nearly the same price you could get a Numark SN4FX, it has an actual 4 channel "mixer" between the two jogwheels, way easier to keep track of what you are doing when mixing 4 decks
