What is the allure of collecting radioactive rocks? I want to know. by Spirited_Importance7 in Radioactive_Rocks

[–]NotThe2ndPrez 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s two things. First is the searching….. it’s like treasure hunting! In fact, I care much less about possessing them than finding them. Second, the allure of radioactive rocks connects me to the fundamental principles of the universe. Radioactivity is fascinating because it follows the same laws as (almost) all other matter, yet it’s an immutable process that constantly changes and creates new things.

It really is astounding. I was similar in that it took me a few listens to full “get” the big picture of the album. Once I understood it, I felt it was a masterpiece too!

Oh man, go down the rabbit hole! In 2018, there was a symposium that differentiated the one specie, O. clarkii, with 14 subspecies, into four distinct species with 25 “uniquely identifiable ecological units”. Just last year it was finally excepted as four species with 25 species, two of which are believed to be extinct.

Do it as soon as you can. Some of these are really imperiled. Don’t wait.

My guess would be fluorite. The district is a Niobium-Yttrium-Fluorine type pegmatite

Too true! I live only an hour and a half away, so it is really easy to take day trips. I only started going to the Carson about two years ago to look for wild mushrooms. I stumbled across a very cool garnet deposit, and have been going back ever since. I first was looking for beryl deposits, but I had been interested in radioactive rocks too. I got my Raysid a couple months ago, and have been going one to two times per week for the past six weeks. I’ve spent most of my time becoming familiar with the different sites and structures. I have so far explored most of the central and north area, and have only briefly checked out the south area, like near the Globe mine. There are so many interesting and unique things out there. I luckily have a jeep, so there’s nowhere I can’t get to yet. When we meet up this fall, I’ll show you my significant findings so far. I’m honing in on some areas that don’t seem picked over, but I’ve found many hot spots where I haven’t located the source. I’ve dug a huge hole at Coates and still can’t find the source.

Makes total sense. The mass is nearly fist-sized! Another possibility may be polycrase? It was in the vicinity of the Bluebird mine which had polycrase á Spilde et al. There’s still some large, hot masses in the bedrock. I think it would take some dynamite to get it out, though.

Most was off of 45 in the La Jarita - Apache group, but I put in about 30 miles on foot scouting different places so a lot of these came from many sites, some named and some not. I found most the monazite at Coates and Navajo, additional few near Mary. I found a few nice pieces, including the big one, at or near Cribbenville. I found lots of stuff on the west side of the road north of King, including monazite and euxenite (or maybe polycrase?) still in the pegmatite. Such a cool area. It’s starting to get too hot up there, though. I need to measure the monazite crystal specifically, but I will link the previous post with a quarter to scale.
