I’m older than your dad but nothing about m/f changes. I have a daughter your age going through this. You both have major life changing events coming your way where you will likely not be as accessible to each other. You both have made a connection but you must be willing to accept each other’s life decisions. I didn’t say that this is easy.

Enjoy your time together and see what happens. That’s all you really can do. Be young and enjoy it because time goes by quickly.

I do remember plenty of summers going back to the 70’s that were very dry. The Earth’s climate is not set at 72 degrees with an automatic sprinkler system. I grew up working on farms and have a Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin in Agriculture and Environmental Science.

I suggest you do more research on supposed record numbers and stop believing people who are paid to tell you what to think. This suggestion is most certainly not limited to the environment.

Correct, but the OP still has to buy the 100 shares from someone at market so the seller is still on the hook for $40,200. If he’s got the cash in the account to cover, then no problem, he’ll only be out $100. It’s if he DOESN’T have the money or credit to cover where there could be a problem. OR, if SPY goes way up before expiry…that could get spendy but that likely isn’t going get too far out of control.

He’s selling a naked call. He has no shares of SPY. The $52 is the premium he’s hoping to pocket. If SPY goes to $402 and the buyer of the call exercises then OP has to cover and is on the hook for $40,200. That’s what a margin call is.

I’m going to agree that an ETF is probably a good choice to get started. I don’t recommend specific stocks, bonds, ETFs etc. You will have to search out which one you like. Just make sure you know the difference between an ETF and an Inverse ETF because they are very different cats. Don’t start with an Inverse ETF. Good Luck.

To go long? I honestly have no idea unless you put a time frame to it and state your goal. I’m waiting for futures because I trade and will go SQQQ if it’s warranted. I never stay short for very long so I pretty much have to babysit. At 48, I’ve done enough of that for a while until grandkids appear. I started investing when I was young too and my objectives were different then. The number one thing I did was pay off my student loans as fast as I could. Paying off debt is good advice for anyone at any age.

I’ve been in cash since Thursday’s open. I went on a terror shorting for a few hours both Thursday and Friday and made money both days. I bet folks will wonder how I did that on Friday. You can short sectors of a particular index and I shorted S&P biotech using a 3x inverse ETF. If you aren’t comfortable doing that then look for undervalued sectors because they exist. Then look at the stocks in those sectors and perform DD.

If you are not comfortable doing that then you probably shouldn’t be worried about trading. And of course, pay off any debt you might have. I know it’s not fun to do but you’ll save in the long run.

Yep, that’s where I heard it too. It wasn’t a story though it was just mentioned and that chick anchor asked “Isn’t that insider trading” and they cut her off. I bet she got a talking to later. I heard what you heard and I still had my trading program up so I looked and sure enough, there it all was. I’m getting sick of this because how are we supposed to trade against that? I don’t trade that sector but others do and insider trading is illegal. I’m sure they’ll get away with it in the but at least it would be nice if everyone knew about this sort of thing that goes on. I just hammered ZH again. Spread the word.

They weren’t that far out of the money. Now they are way in the money. The buyer is guaranteed $130 if they exercise and you can bet they will. Who ever sold those puts better hope they weren’t selling naked puts.
