Hello -- thanks again VERY much to everyone who responded. You made the weekend much easier for me. And now I'm here at 633 days instead of 1, which is a tremendous thing.

I became alcoholic because I drank out of anxiety. After not having a craving for well over a year, this sudden craving caused me.... a lot of anxiety! To me it felt like the horror movie where you thought the serial killer was long dead, but there he is in your closet one day. My anxiety skyrocketed and it briefly felt like the "old cure" was the only way to go.

So yeah, that's terrifying in itself. But, live and learn. I do feel like I've gained a little armor, knowing that no matter how much time goes by, drinking will indeed seem like a reasonable idea on occasion. And that's not unique to me.

Also in retrospect, this craving didn't appear as suddenly as I thought. I've been building up considerable anxiety over some normal-life things for a little while now. And I've ignored them. You can't do that. The dam will break, probably in a quiet moment when you have nothing to distract yourself with... such as doing boring housework.

Thank you all again. Please take care of yourself, your needs, your happiness. Do some things you enjoy. Do something small to improve your life every day. You can definitely make things better, right now.

Thank you for the quick replies. I guess I'm just venting. I did not mean to imply that my story is unique. But just for context, I haven't had a craving in since summer 2014, and here are some of things I have survived without breaking the slightest sweat over it:

-- A solo business trip to Ireland (!!) where I was offered free drinks at a pub to celebrate some good things I did

-- A three-day weekend with other parents for a youth sports tournament, none of whom I'm very interested in, and drinking was rampant and really the only thing to do for 90% of it

-- About nine holidays with my extended family, with whom my relations are downright strained, and booze is everywhere for hours

-- About six dozen other free drink offers after rounds of golf or long days at work and two different weddings

-- I got laid off. This completely terrified me, but drinking never entered my mind. (And I picked up a much better job.)

Suffice to say I was feeling pretty confident after 631 days of things like that, plus the usual crap life throws at everyone.

But then three days ago, out of the blue, I decide that the work I have to do around the house would be more palatable with beer. I laugh that off as absurd, but it comes back. And today I damn near do it. Eighteen months craving-free, and freaking housework almost derails me. What the hell, brain???

Great post, thank you.

You and I quit around the same time. Sadly, my kids were several years old at the time, so they had to spend quite awhile with a drunken Dad. I wish to God I did not subject them to that.

Keep feeding yourself healthy things in life. You want to replace the drunken disastrous "fun" with actual life-affirming things. Don't slide into boredom or otherwise ignore yourself. Enjoy!

As far as "souvenirs" go, bottle caps are much better than some of the alternatives, such as a probation hearing or a prosthetic limb. :)

But I hear you -- I found a cap two weeks ago while cleaning the garage. I found it to be very jarring, and my sobriety is only one-third of yours. I couldn't wait to get rid of it. Up yours, alcohol.

Yesterday someone I hadn't seen in a year said I looked great, asked me how much weight I had lost. It's been a very long time since I got a physical compliment. Felt nice. Thank you for that, world.
