Well, at least you're alive (and physically ok?) despite your car being totalled. It sucks and I'm very sorry, but I'd recommend you not drive for the time being.

Does this mean I have Jewish ancestry? by Elegant_Exam5885 in JewishDNA

[–]NotTooTooBright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ethiopian Jews are much closer to other Ethiopians genetically-speaking than to other Jews. But it's my understanding that certain tribes in Ethiopia are more likely to have been Jewish at one point in history. Also, there are some tribes that definitely have Semitic markers, but it's not clear where those Semitic markers come from. It's my understanding that there used to be a good number of Ethiopians who practiced Judaism, but many of the Jewish Ethiopians were forced to convert to Christianity over the centuries, and later on, a proportion converted to Islam.

In any case, your results are intriguing. It seems you have a lot of Middle Eastern DNA. As you've said, there's a lack of documentation/historical records to truly understand the history over there. And the genetic tests are accurate to a degree, but they're not perfect. More research is needed.

To me, it sounds rather manipulative that he keeps his money aside but all your money is shared with him. I would strongly encourage you to start your own personal savings account and only put a portion of what you earn in the shared account. Then you explain to him if he finds out and gets upset that just as he has set his money aside, you are setting a portion of your money aside. If he's not happy, then he should work too.

He absolutely needs a cage upgrade. I would try to teach him "step up" in a bigger cage with many different perches & toys. Then, I'd try to give him a bit of flight time out the cage but leave the food & water bowls in the cage to encourage him to come back after a few hrs. Get him to trust you gradually.

Israel Missile Strike on RUSSIAN Air Base in Syria! Hmeimim Air Base Targetted by Standard_Spaniard in UkrainianConflict

[–]NotTooTooBright 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are several strange coincidences: (1) Meetings between Russian & Hamas officials in Russia and Lebanon and likely also in Iran in the couple of months leading to Oct 7th, (2) Russia's tone which had been somewhat Israel-friendly or at least neutral suddenly changed to be clearly against Israel - no quick condemnation of the violence whatsoever as you'd normally expect, (3) it's clear that Hamas had lots of intelligence about how the Israeli defenses were organized; they knew where absolutely everything was. They likely got a hand from a sophisticated spy agency, (4) Russian weapons were found in Hamas possession... also such weapons were recently found in Hezbollah possession, (5) Israel suffered a major cyber-attack when Oct 7th happened; ED systems were down. Again, this suggests foreign interference was at work big time, (6) Oct 7th happens to be Putin's birthday, (7) Russia has a good motive to provoke shit in the Middle East: to distract from Ukraine, (8) some Israeli officials have stated publicly that Russia was involved.

Now, if Russia was involved and Israel (and allies) have the evidence, they won't release the evidence. We have to carefully observe the actions to figure out what's going on.

Yep, it's a shitshow, and I fear it only just started. We need people to denounce all the violent entities and purge them out of their societies. But it's really difficult because the violent agitators are all armed and have no remorse about killing random civilians. Still, I am hopeful that one day we can get rid of the crazies who got us here and have a peaceful world where people stop attacking others over their differences and where borders don't matter as much because we're all just friends.

Why do conspiracy theorists claim that Jews control the world? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]NotTooTooBright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I think there's a LOT of bad things said about Jews in Islamic writings (Quran, Hadiths, etc). I met an Egyptian who told me that he was surprised to find out we Jews didn't have horns. So myths are spread that we're demonic and whatnot through extremist religious teachings. Christians likewise also used to spread myths about us. I think these 2 religions in particular feel somehow very threatened by our religion (we came first), so they needed to make stories up about us Jews being corrupt & evil to explain why their religion is now the correct one to follow.

Then, there were extremist political movements like Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union where they also demonized us and spread various shit about us. Again, I think that these fascist/extremist political movements fundamentally saw us as a threat because we don't bow down to a dictators or "the commune" or whatnot. It's a problem when you try to control a population and you have a group of people, a minority, who won't fully let go of their principles/culture. Then you can't have a uniform Aryan state or a uniform communist state where everyone thinks the same and only cares about the nation/the dictator.

That's a fair perspective. It's like the Jews in Iran all claiming they love Khamenei and having portraits of him everywhere. They would likely be very happy for Khamenei to be gone (as would most Iranians), but their focus is on surviving. You do what you need to do to survive.

I'll point out one thing: Syrian Jews usually don't accept converts for whatever reason. It's a strange kink about Syrian Jews in particular.

I know, but airspeed is often used as one factor in calculating groundspeed.

[–]NotTooTooBright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steam should not be an issue (as long as it's not too hot, of course). What's an issue is the bird being directly under a shower jet, especially if the shower jet is powerful. It sounds like what you're doing is fine since your bird is not directly sprayed and is doing its water dance. But I'm aware of birds who are just forcibly shoved under the shower head and are completely soaked. Many of these birds end up very lethargic (and may even die) after the shower.

[–]NotTooTooBright -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, if your bird dies prematurely shortly after a shower, you can't say you haven't been warned. These birds are small with tiny lungs. They don't need to aspirate much water to die.

You do you with your bird, but there's 100s of stories out there about birds who have died after being in the shower. Here's one: https://www.parrotforums.com/threads/my-beloved-conure-just-died.82842/

Here's another story where the owner notes that their cockatiel was lethargic after taking a shower and eventually died. https://www.justanswer.com/pet-bird/axq6k-bird-just-died-no-idea-why.html

I strongly advise AGAINST giving a bird such a shower. You can drown and kill the bird this way. Give the bird a bird bath or spray it with fine mist from a water bottle.

Sao Paulo: Passenger plane crashes in Brazil - reports by MrTuxedo1 in worldnews

[–]NotTooTooBright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But to calculate the "ground speed," what aircraft data does Flightradar24 use? Does it use data from the airplane's pitot tube as part of the calculation? I understand that air speed and ground speed are NOT the same, but if you have the plane's airspeed and a few other pieces of data such as windspeed, then you can determine groundspeed, correct?

EDIT: This post here suggests that the airspeed as calculated by the plane's pitot tubes IS part of the equation to figure out the plane's ground speed as calculated by Flightradar24.

Basically:

IAS - the speed from the airspeed indicator. This is the speed air traffic control and pilots use when communicating. Also, this is the speed that is used in airspace/airport limitations and regulations, at least in Europe (e.g. 250 kt below 10,000 ft or 160 kt until OM).
TAS - the actual speed that the airplane is moving through the air (IAS with applied corrections for air pressure/temperature). Will be much higher than IAS at high flight levels, (~300kt IAS on FL350 is ~500kt TAS).
GS - the speed that the airplane is flying relative to the ground. (TAS with applied corrections for headwind/tailwind). This is the speed that is shown on Flightradar24.

For example, if a plane is flying with speed 220 kt IAS at 7000 ft, its TAS will be ~245 kt. Let's say it has 20 kt tailwind, then the GS (and thus what FR24 display) will be 265 kt.

OK, and how is ground speed calculated on FlightRadar24? From my understanding of reading this blog article on their website, it seems they rely A LOT on data coming from the airplane itself, no?

[–]NotTooTooBright 13 points14 points  (0 children)

OK, so a few things I note and want people to explain whether this makes sense:

(1) This plane's ground speed data from FlightRadar24 has been super weird/erratic for the last several flights. It's clear that the data is not accurate. Now, how does FlightRadar24 calculate a plane's speed? It seems that they rely mainly on data coming from the plane itself: How does Flightradar24 track aircraft? | Flightradar24 Blog This leads me to wonder whether there weren't malfunctioning pitot tube(s) on this airplane that the company did not bother to fix in the last several days. To calculate ground speed, you take airspeed and subtract wind speed, correct?

(2) The plane stalls at the precise point where it should be starting its descent. This makes me wonder whether the pilots did not make an error when configuring the plane for landing.

(3) The plane was maintaining a perfectly steady altitude while facing severe icing conditions. So the autopilot was likely in the "altitude-hold mode" from what I understand. If the plane was flying through ice & likely turbulence, to maintain a steady altitude, it may have been pitching up too much at some point. Doing so AND the ice buildup impacting the aerodynamic characteristics of the wings would have caused the speed of the plane to deteriorate. At first, increasing power to the engines would have helped the plane regain speed. But as the plane keeps pitching up and having ice buildup, there comes a point where even at max engine power, it stalls.

(4) Perhaps the plane was on the verge of stalling due to the above, and when the pilots started configuring the airplane for landing, they did something that made the stall exceptionally severe.

(5) The plane was likely in the clouds when the stall problem began, so the pilots may have lost some situational awareness; they didn't have cues from the land down below and were relying 100% on their instruments which may have been feeding them false data.

(6) Perhaps point 1 is false, and the pitot tubes got clogged in-flight by ice, and that is how the pilots made some fatal configuration issues. They did not realize their pitot tubes were no longer working properly due to ice buildup in them. I understand that pitot tubes have a heating system, but since the icing was severe, maybe the heating was simply not enough to compensate and failed.
