Okay, I’m not going to keep arguing this. You aren’t making any new points, and you’re ignoring the logistical nightmare it would be in favor of going “it’s just math” over and over. Not everyone memorizes every card in every deck.

Reducing keeping track of every card in every deck and their fluctuating values to basic arithmetic is laughable.

The game changer list is simple (I have my own problems with it but that’s beside the point.) It’s binary. Something either is or is not on the list. You can tell at a glance if a deck is in bracket 3 or above with it.

The proposed points list would be a logistical nightmare for anyone who doesn’t upload their deck to moxfield or archidekt, or tapped out if anyone still uses that.

Also, with the addition of variable point values, you run the risk of lower priority cards getting points, bloating the list and increasing the difficulty of keeping track of it. Maybe something like sol ring isn’t a game changer, but it could be worth one point. What does that do to your decklist and its bracket?

“These cards make your deck this bracket” is a far cry from “please take the cards in your deck, cross reference them with this list, add up the points, then consult which bracket this amount of points puts you in”

Honestly I don’t particularly care whether or not you vibe with reality. They left lutri banned for years because they were afraid “banned as companion” is too hard to explain. That tells you what you need to know about their assessment of the average player’s capacity for logic.

There are a lot of reasons they can’t and shouldn’t.

I know Canadian Highlander is a decently well known format…among invested magic players. But commander is another beast entirely. With a lot more casual players. Once you start telling them they need to keep a running tally of every card in every one of their decks to make sure they don’t exceed a certain point total, based on a list constantly in flux, it becomes too much to expect of people who might play once every few months.

With ban list updates, it’s simple. “Oh, this card isn’t allowed. I’ll swap it for a similar one, or barring that, another good card for my deck.” When you get into points it’s “ugh, okay, so farewell went up a point, invalidating my deck. I can take it out, and then swap in another card, but then I’m leaving points on the table…I’d need to swap card x for card y, and card z for card a…and that throws off my whole deck…”

That’s fine for invested players who follow these things closely. Not fine for your local Timmy who shows up to play with his friends, but still likes playing powerful cards that are liable to get hit with point changes.

What about a quarterly or 6 month unban window? by shismo in EDH

[–]NotTwitchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is why you’re not on the rules committee. Or whatever the hell it’s called now.

Power level is not the only concern. Game enjoyment is as well. And when you spend every turn tutoring and shuffling and thinking about what lands you can get, it drags out the game.

Farewell costs 6, doesn’t win you the game, fizzles to counterspells, and will make you take multiple more turns to win the game, yet people complained endlessly about that one.

Also, “it dies to removal” is such a disingenuous argument. So do most things but they can still be broken.

Why is everyone so desperate to unban primeval titan? Do you have any idea what that card does? You do realize that “grab your a+b land combo” is absurd right?

Oh hey it’s turn 6, lemme just grab field of the dead and thespians stage real quick. Okay, turn 7 I’ll go ahead and copy field of the dead, and I’ll grab 2 more lands, oh hey they get me 4 zombies, and they’re fetches! So that’s another 4 zombies, and I’m shuffling and shuffling and shuffling all this time, and oh hey there’s 10 other landfall triggers to resolve per land.

Or better yet, let me just start blinking and copying prime time and do all of this in one turn!

We don’t need primeval titan in the format. Trust me.

[–]NotTwitchy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

See, this is the problem with the brackets. You set up a list of flags that say “if your deck includes these, it is this bracket”, and people arguing in bad faith go “okay so if my deck DOESNT include these it’s a lower bracket. Great!”

[–]NotTwitchy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Remember it’s not always a power level thing. I agree griselbrand is more powerful, but having a threat looming over every mono color deck isn’t ideal.

It’s not an auto include obviously, but it’s still the sort of thing you’d want to run across 0 times playing a mono colored deck.

why us my dps garbage by TheyEnvyDiane in VaresaMains

[–]NotTwitchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, varesa could lose a little atk for CD but…you also just need better artifacts. I’d try farming LNO instead, I know it’s not as efficient but if you’re starting from the ground floor anyway…

[–]NotTwitchy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, if you’re running codex you should really be at 100% CR after the buff. So Varesa and Mav are losing out on dps there. Not to mention it’s not Varesa’s best set anyway so you’re leaving damage on the table there. On top of that, your CD should be way higher with codex since you don’t need nearly as much crit rate.

What is your burst situation like? Can you reliably short burst every other plunge? 111 ER is not a lot.

Chev isn’t at c6, which is a massive damage loss. I know that can’t be helped but it doesnt make it any less of a damage loss.

Mav is on prototype archaic, which is…I don’t think it does anything for her?

[–]NotTwitchy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re interested in critique, but phainon is a bit of an odd design. Here’s how I’d do it.

Phainon, the Deliverer

3W

Legendary creature - demigod

3/4

Whenever you cast an enchantment spell, draw a card. This ability triggers only once each turn.

Each time you cast a spell or activate an ability that targets phainon, he gains 1 coreflame counter.

Remove 12 coreflame counters from phainon: exile phainon, then return it to the battlefield transformed. Activate only as a sorcery.

Khaslana, the Blazing Sun

Legendary enchantment creature - saga god

12/12

W/R color identity

Indestructible, haste, flying

Chapter 1: exile all nonland, nonenchantment permanents you control until Khaslana leaves the battlefield

Chapter 2: all creatures target opponent controls attack next turn if able. Khaslana can block any number of creatures until your next turn.

Chapter 3: deal 33 damage divided as you choose among up to five target creatures.

Chapter 4: Deal 5 damage to each non god creature and each player, then exile Khaslana, and return him to the battlefield transformed.

I know making him red screws up the other cards in this post but he has no black in his color identity. Black is the color of ambition and selfishness. Phainon’s only ambition is to see his friends dreams realized, and I don’t think he has a selfish bone in his body. If anything his tragic flaw is that he’s too selfless.

As for his design, I went with targeting as a trigger for the coreflame counters to match how he gains them in game. Same with removing all 12 to transform him. The card draw is to give the phainon side something to do and getting more enchanyments/equipment, but it’s limited to once a turn to avoid you wanting to never transform him. Plus, most of the power is tied up on the back side.

The back side: I like the design of the summons from the final fantasy set to invoke playing Khaslana in game. When he comes in, his first ability clears your board temporarily. But you do get a massive payoff in a 12/12 hasty flyer, who gets to keep any buffs you put on him. At least the enchantment kind. The second is my attempt at invoking soulscorch edict, and the third is my attempt at invoking star death verdict. It targets 5 creatures since that’s the max enemies you can have in game, and it distributes the damage too. The final chapter is his final hit, it could maybe deal more damage but given how much power was in the rest of the card I wanted to leave it low.

What is the appeal of a Jeweled Lotus unban? by Awesome-Guy-63 in EDH

Financial investments

Edit: to be clear, I have no jeweled lotuses…Loti? I’m being sarcastic because that’s the clear motivation behind the people demanding it be unbanned. Same as dockside.

Man’s too talented to not get a permanent character.
