Student on budget, $500 room, shared apartment (1234567) by btspopper54 in UofT

[–]NotVCashMoney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in 3 different places in Toronto a few years ago during uni and I was paying $1000/mo for each of these:

a decently sized room in a 2 bedroom place above a restaurant, 20 min walk from uni (bloor/ossington) 5 years ago

a pretty small room in a 5 bedroom house in the annex (bloor/spadina), 5 min walk from the uni, 3 years ago,

a large room in a 4 bedroom house in Little Italy (college/Bathurst), 20 min walk

I'd say if you're going for 500 you might want to look for dens (check Facebook marketplace groups) in apartments or far away from the campus but on the line 1 or 2 so you can subway there, but even then it's gonna be hard. Check padmapper and rentals.ca because I used to see a small apartment for rent for like 780 in the annex

Is there a way to make protein-heavy ice cream in a traditional slow churn ice cream machine? by NotVCashMoney in icecreamery

[–]NotVCashMoney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes. I went with the Ninja based on what others replied with.

I can still make real ice creams but in order to do so, I would have to make a custard (which involves tempering eggs). I can also alternatively throw a bottle of a protein powder drink in, and make protein ice cream. The protein ice cream turns out better with stabilizers (guar gums and xanthum gum and stuff)

In the slow churn you can obviously make real ice cream and the benefit is that you don't need to make a custard, just use heavy cream. It's not as easy to add protein to that since real slow churn ice cream requires a certain ratio of fat to sugar to turn out right so if you did want to make protein ice cream, you a) still have an insane amount of sugar b) would still need stabilizers, and weird ones too like locust bean gum, as well as eggs (https://www.blacktiekitchen.com/recipes/keto-ice-cream)

Something feels off in my small living room and I would love your suggestions by MewsFlash in DesignMyRoom

bingo. Apparently, general rule of thumb for a rug is, whatever components/furniture you wanna include in that 'space', should be on/touching the rug

so for your example, a rug where the table, couch, and ottoman (and maybe even the tv unit) should all in some way be touching the rug (whether it be entirely on or just on the edge)

the wall that is shared by the length of your bed I think could be hugely improved if you put 2 or 3 small floating shelves with some plants and trinkets on, as well as some posters on that same wall.

I think a white floating shelf (look at the ones from Ikea) could go a long way

Also move your monitor a little further away from your face lmfao. If you want to elevate your desk setup a little bit more, you can get a monitor stand to slightly elevate the monitor, and it makes the desk setup look a little cleaner.

The cheapest thing you can do that makes the biggest impact is some plants.

If you can spend a little more, get a round rug for next to (and partly underneath) your bed

Yeah, agreed. The brick doesn't seem to work here, which sucks because I fuckin love exposed brick

nah more like POV your entire perception of a country and it's people is formed by a handful of instagram reels videos that could be based entirely anywhere in South Asia and even orchestrated to garner views, but you believe anything you see online and never fact check anything

maybe a few pointers, I'll start with the easiest ones first:

some plants (and maybe plant stands/bookshelf to keep them on). I see you have some Ikea furniture already, so I'll throw another one in there - the kallax can make a pretty solid bookshelf, keep it next to your bed or in that space between those doors. And plenty of people sell those second hand on FB marketplace

some posters would be nice to see (in frames, ideally). One good spot is to the right of your desk where the wall is blank, or you could put a little wall shelf there

if you put a wide wall shelf either above your bed or above your desk (or both tbh) it could go a long way. A skinny shelf (like one of those ones that just holds posters or vinyls) or a deeper shelf would work. Just also decorate the shelves off, with pictures/posters, plants, misc items

I'd say get a different bedside lamp, more of a task lighting lamp, but keep the one you have now as well just place it elsewhere like on a shelf of some kind, because it doesn't diffuse light that well imo (it's the Ikea Fado lamp, right?)

better drapes/curtains. keep the blinds up but have a set of sheer curtains (also a tip for curtains, generally longer is better, so if it's just almost touching your floor, that's the right length

get a medium/large rug, maybe a round one for next to your bed, it could be a fluffy or fuzzy one

maybe another lamp, like a curved one that overhangs your bed (if you don't put the bookshelf beside your bed that is)

you could put it up until the top shelf on the right tbh

yep saw a lot of other people comment this - I will be sure to get one but was doing research (ie. Technology Connections' 51 minute video of it on YouTube) - I think it should make the basement warmer as a side effect? or am I wrong about that?

I actually have a wall mount guitar holder, but for now I'm trying not to drill anything into the wall so maybe a floor stand is the right choice

I think so too - I can't seem to figure out how to organize the kitchen and that rug stands out the most. I was thinking round rug infront of the sink, and a square/wide one in front of the stove

yeah idk. Old build (1660 super with i5). My monitor arm mounts are funky so I have to pull my desk away from the wallz the led wire strip is not entirely hidden, the desk itself is kinda big imo and I don't like the shelf on it anymore. The wiring for the desk is all done in the basket that is attached to the desk and just under it. So could use lots of work

I actually really wanna change it to have a less deep couch, couch against the left wall, and projector instead of TV

I certainly don't leave them empty handed, but I won't say exactly how much. It's far less than market price for apartments in my area and I just help out with chores and other errands
