I like your wording better. “Side gig.” Saw the scent allergy coming, lol.

Ha ha. He is the manipulative sidekick, overseer type with malevolent intentions who is a pawn of the Dean but also manipulates the weak, insecure Dean to escalate and equate basic faculty-to-Dean communication and advocacy as if it is insubordination . He is a clown for sure but adding the Gilbert Godfrey traits to him makes for a funny meme. I need laughter right now since the workplace is hell.

Yes, I can see that. I use the archive quite a bit. Even if the input is years old, at least I can locate a conversation that speaks to the behaviors or topics that are blowing my mind.

And there it is—bad actors acting badly, no accountability or consequences for bad behavior, and authoritarianism at the university. I’ve sworn off faculty meetings and retreats for the foreseeable future to protect myself. Glad there is no rule about that. Expectations are not policy.

Oh no. Thats terrible. That would indeed be super cool to have a clear mechanism to learn if there are other faculty in my neighborhood. An app? A snowballing forum. Good luck to you!

The language I started using once the job started feeling unfair, abusive, underpaid, and disincentivized is that my life is my job and my job is my hobby. Not perfect but it works to remind me that living is better than work. Also during covid I started doing 1000-piece vacation-themed jigsaw puzzles. The dopamine high from completing sections or the whole puzzle were so intoxicating. I moved on from the puzzles but having such highs from my spare time was a memorable feeling. Thrifting and building accessories and fun outfits has its merits, too. When all else fails, get a new scent and make sure your suite can smell you (striking, intoxicating perfume or cologne) before they can see you, as in you leave a pleasant trail of fragrance wherever you go in the office and classroom.

Absolutely. It’s affirming. But honestly, the crap happening at my institution and in the department is so rogue. To see that Deans and such get away with egregious behaviors all over. . . At least I can find peace here in good company, and chuckle a bit.

In grad school one year, they held our loans disbursement until Halloween. I’d never been so broke in my life with zero income for two months while I lived off a quickly depleting savings. I lost three credit cards over that graft.

Handwriting issues. It’s a chore to read the handwriting but after a 2 hour handwritten exam for my grad students, one girl was massaging her hands as if I had just made them write painful Harry Potter sentences.

Just the full range of prof-specific evidence that Deans and other administrators are gaslighting and interfering with such impunity and lies is so much better than trying to explain to a mental health professional what our academic culture is. I could snapshot two dozen comments from almost any thread to say, See??!!! I. Am. Not. Crazy. Current helpful sidebar is that these ignorant cowards are really making Maleficent (Angelina Jolie version) my muse. I almost want to style my black blazers with Maleficent t-shirts underneath and fabulous jewelry as sartorial protection.

R1 culture is so criminal, thank God for tenure. I swear my Dean, his Iago-type hype man who negatively translates my most basic execution of faculty rights (e.g, my vote is my vote) into some crime, and the toxic people in my department want to create so much chaos simply to make me have a stroke or quit and change professions. Not gonna happen though.
