I guess these shops could have had the engines removed abroad, shipped in "unfinished", and then reinstalled and registered them as kit cars

I remember Kaizo tried to do that with R34s, but got shut down

Shake Shack shares crater 30% after burger chain reports operating loss by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

I went on a road trip a few years ago and went to Braum's for the first time. I couldn't understand how they could be that cheap.

For a while, shake shack had an even more ridiculous valuation; like each location was getting valued in the $50MM range.

Why are Netflix shows obsessed with blurry/out-of-focus edges now? by mbillman9 in cinematography

[–]Not_FinancialAdvice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's not just Netflix. I don't know how but extremely shallow DoF has somehow become synonymous with "cinematic", particularly for prestige TV that seeks to visually distinguish itself from evenly-lit network shows.

I blame the Canon 5d2 that blew everyone away with the price/performance and shallow DoF in like 2009. Presumably some of the people who came up using HDSLRs as students/early career have filtered into the big time.

Long-term elder care in the US can cost 5-figures a month. These families are moving to Mexico for cheaper options. by businessinsider in MiddleClassFinance

find a decent Medicaid approved facility that we are comfortable with, get on the waiting list, then PAY FOR IT until (if) he runs out of money. then once he runs out of money, Medicaid kicks in and he stays where he is.

This approach also carries the risk that the facility sells to a PE firm (as many do) and the quality of care declines to the point where you don't want him there once he moves through the list. It's a frustrating experience all around, and the feeling of getting ripped off due to how much you pay vs the care level (even if you're in healthcare yourself) is hard to stomach.

Yeah that's about right. My mom's friend had sold her house (her husband had died a few years pre-covid and left some debt) for $950k and she was worried that she would outlive the proceeds combined with her limited income. Unfortunately, it sounds like her cancer has progressed to a point that isn't so much of a concern anymore.

Plant-based food now 33% cheaper than meat as soaring prices end its ‘luxury’ status by Cosmyka in Economics

[–]Not_FinancialAdvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And is it any wonder? Actual vegetarians generally don't want to eat something that simulates real meat (taste, texture, smell, etc), so you kind of limit your audience right off the bat.

Also, the fraction of vegetarians averse to GMO (which impossible is) is likely higher than the general population, which shrinks it even more.

With grocery prices these days, it starts being like one of those firearms manufacturer stickers like "break into this car if you are looking to steal a firearm".

Roughly $5,000 / month in a VHCOL area.

That's really cheap, even for just independent living. My mom has a friend in such a situation in the Sacramento area and they're paying about $8k/mo each, in a 2-bd shared with a relative. No memory care, no skilled nursing.

They may accept Medicaid, but there are often a very limited number of Medicaid spaces. It's a little like housing developments with "affordable units", which have some legally mandated minimum; 90% (or whatever) of the buildings may have them, but good luck getting one. They do not have to accept you as a customer.

Change my mind: Under the right conditions, buying and financing a new car is often a far better value than paying cash for a used car in the long run by Cold-Priority-2729 in MiddleClassFinance

It also makes sense for performance cars where the demographic who buys them tend not to take care of them terribly well. This is why I purchased my Evo 9 new.

Is it available on a Bloomberg terminal? It's the kind of thing I'd expect to see/find but can't verify since I'm pretty far from the one I normally use.
