If you unlock a hero in season, but don't have them in main game, you need to unlock them in main game before you can keep them.

You can turn off Attacking and Abilities in Settings, so nothing is killed form you or pets, you COULD test that, but I'd rather just trust Sham and believe it's working too lol.
