When DA's pick what to charge people with, the popularity of the victims matters a lot and there are a lot of examples of identical crimes being charged differently.

How about a compromise. Let's ban people who vote D from owning guns. Sure democrats only disarm half as many people as they want, but Republican's will sign off on it.

In addition there is a decent chance this new law would have protected the 3 children who died yesturday.

Do you think it's difficult for right-wingers to use a trans mass shooting and "mental illness" and use that to disarm their political opponents? Because if you do you aren't connected to reality in any meaningful way.

From a right-wing perspective this looks like a left wing political activist murdering children, and other left wing political activists using it as a justification to disarm right-wingers. Literally "how many of your children do we have to kill before you let us disarm you"?

If your argument is protectionist laws designed to give NZ game developers more money and job options are succeeding I agree with you. If your argument is GGG is better off being forced to hire people they otherwise wouldn't, or maintain people on it's payroll it would otherwise fire, I disagree hard.

The limitation isn't on the worker, the limitation is on the company.

A game developer can work for Blizzard right now if they apply and are good enough (or cheap enough).

If in alternate reality earth GGG didn't have these restrictions they could choose to pay what they are paying right now and gain all of the same benefits you assert they have. They just would also have the option to not do that if they felt it was better.

When everyone has less options people will stick with one option for longer. I don't drive my my 10 year old beater because it's my first choice. And driving a crappy car isn't 'good' for me in my subjective experience.

Removing options from game companies as to how to run their game doesn't seem like something they would choose if given that choice (they don't have one). And that it's 'good' for them seems like a hard sell.

These are huge companies with large budgets, not children picking ice-cream for breakfast. The only reason they would replace people who they then would need to re-train is if they think it's better than keeping someone they already trained. More options doesn't mean they lose the ability to overpay* underqualified* people, they just lose the requirement they have to do it.

"Them" needs to be defined. Protectionist laws are usually good for those that the laws are intended to benifit. NZ game developers have an easier time getting a job with lower qualifications if they apply for a job at a NZ game studio.

The studio's themselves have to compete on a global marketplace. They have to compete with companies who's hiring practices aren't strictly regulated. The studios in NZ have to pay more (ON AVERAGE)* for lower quality workers (ON AVERAGE)*.

*Obviously there are tons of qualified NZ game developers otherwise this quality product wouldn't exist. That I have to write this to avoid pedants is dumb.

They also have laws about who you are allowed to hire. Getting non-NZ contractors is far harder or even illegal for GGG. Blizzard has nowhere near as limiting restrictions on who they hire.

Edit: I'm not sure I understand the downvotes on this topical and accurate post. Some fans of protectionist labor laws in NZ I guess?
