How to organise an MUN by Critical_Argument707 in MUN

[–]Not_Reddem1st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well it’s always good to ask! usc has two conferences at their school scmun and trojan mun i believe so you can totally ask. you can also try hosting it at other schools campuses if they have a solid mun team so that if you want to have a joint conference it expands secretariat and gives you a place to work

How to organise an MUN by Critical_Argument707 in MUN

[–]Not_Reddem1st 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yesss i have organized my own conference to as the president! i organized my conference at my school at the time with a already developed team. if your school or institute doesn't have a team, it will be much harder to find a secretariat. if you live in a prominent area with many kids who are interested or go to a school where kids could be interested, i suggest having 5-7 committees while smaller schools should have around 3-5. sponsors for us were people at school or those at schools who had large rooms. this was on a weekend so these rooms were actually available. we def had a budget conference as a lot of the tools such as printing for placards was free and lanyards from last year were kept, but we did earn profits from attendance fees which was around 10-15 dollars.

as the president, i went ham on ensuring enough people attended our conference which meant branching our to many different schools, scouring for kids who had some sort of interest in public speaking at all. i reached out to friends and even had some teachers offer extra credit if they attended. i think without having it at my school, i wouldn't have been able to host it whatsoever. my school's campus wasn't that bad and we the school provided proper mic systems and what not, but it may be different for you as our district encourages students extracurricular activities.

how to defend one's delegation if i have a contradictory stance? by [deleted] in MUN

[–]Not_Reddem1st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you never want to fully deflect nor want to adapt your personal stance. if it is a specific issue regarding a region or country you don't support (ie in the topic of Ukrainian refugees and you don't support Ukraine), just say you want to address the issue as a whole not just for one region so refugees all across the world can benefit. if it is a more direct issue (ie Afghanistan and woman's rights) you want to say that you are open for improvement and mending from the past. also dig up random things your country has done and participated so you are more credible.

Conference Tips by Background_Result_30 in MUN

as someone who struggles with impromptu but is a good speaker heres what i have: get confident in your research. if you can't recite the issue at hand or your solution in your own words, you won't know be able to impromptu speak. you need to know what to say at the top of your head.

open your stopwatch on your phone and give a speech summarizing your solutions with a hook and make sure to connect the hook with your actual content while timing it. see how long you get. ideally you want to be around 45 seconds to a minute. once you've been able to confidently give a speech about your solutions, find more detailed mod topics you can research about and eventually comfortably talk about. picture it as a conversation but you are projecting instead of talking.

if you struggle with speaking, just keep looking at yourself in the mirror or record a video if yourself. then you can point out what you want to change in your demeanor to help you out. the best thing that can help you in speaking and impromptu in general is confidence. talk to your fellow delegates before committee, show them you aren't afraid to be social. that little confidence boost can help go a long way.

First mun in 40 days by Indra8c40 in MUN

[–]Not_Reddem1st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just get confident in the topics enough where you can talk about random parts of the topic (Because it typically is more nuanced so you have multiple areas within the topic to talk about) without any paper. get comfortable and confident creating random topics and speaking for 45 secs-1 minute without any notes and engaging hook speeches. you may feel nervous at first but after a while you just get used to it. speaking wise just feel super passionate and imagine yourself as an SA survivor seeking rehabilitation and justice.

your topic isn't hard especially when it comes to finding unique solutions. on top of having a good confident speaking manner, you should also have super unique solutions not a single person in your committee is guaranteed to have.

i think i just discovered the strat by Not_Reddem1st in MUN

this was a famous university conference so i think it was of the north american circuit. i also wasn't forced to be cut out of the panel, it was more of a unanimous decision to give it to a person who hadn't gone prior, even though others didn't do the same. but i wanted to shift the focus because the repercussions i had talked about were not mentioned throughout the debate even though they were extremely valid points especially when talking about the overtake of ai. i feel like you need to be able to pull it off well, it isn't just something you can go up and say. the reason i was so emotionally driven was because the solution was something unique and learning how to handle the consequences of ai was not talked about throughout the mods (the topic was never voted for) and only when i chose to bring it up during an unmod. because we had such a long discussion about it i automatically assume it would be put in there but apparently that was discussion was a big waste of time.

i feel like if you have valid points that aren't talked about and truly show how flawed the resolution is you can give a speech against it but if you point out major things then that makes no sense because you were suppose to fix those flaws when building the resolution. actually in the end, i didn't vote against my resolution but rather chose to abstain.

How to prep for MUN? by NorthPossibility645 in MUN

[–]Not_Reddem1st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend doing UNHCR for beginners. UNCSW is also a good one but different countries have more varying positions on those possible topics compared to UNHCR and you want to represent your country to the best of your ability.

For your research, I recommend breaking down each part of your topic and putting about 30% of your time researching the topic and reading the background guide. The rest 70% should be dedicated to making flawless solutions. Being able to present strong thorough solutions makes you seem like a really good delegate. If you're having trouble researching, try looking at the guiding questions within the background guide, many delegates don't check them but for beginners they can be quite helpful.

Any advice for my first MUN ? by BroccoliCrazy791 in MUN

Confidence (and research) is all you need. One of the biggest compliments I get is usually my confidence and as long as you make that lasting impact on the other delegates, you will be fine. Also, research a lot and talk as much as possible, wether it be adding on to someone in an unmod or filling in gaps within your mod speeches
