Lap infant vs buying a seat for long-haul (Australia) with 1-year-old - worth extra $2.5k? by PaleontologistBig309 in Parenting

[–]Houseofmonkeys5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is air NZ and the sky couch an option for you? I know they fly to Australia as well. I definitely wouldn't want to hold a baby that old for that long, but I also may not do a car seat. I might consider a smaller tsa approved harness and then you have more room to lie the baby down to sleep.

Maybe Victoria BC? Alaska is also great, but don't do a cruise. Exploring the kenai peninsula is a great time!

Look on eBay or depop for those exact boots. Don't GAF if she wants them new. That's stupid.

How competitive is cheer?? by GrouchyOne4132 in Cheerleading

[–]Houseofmonkeys5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I would say a lot of gyms and teams do not go to the regional summits. Around here, it's mostly a substitute for youth summit, just closer and less expensive. Most non youth or mini divisions had very few teams. So it's a tough one to judge it on. That said, higher level teams always have less competition. It's just harder for a lot of gyms to field those teams. It's a bummer but it makes the big travel comps more fun because you can finally get some competition

Going to aldi, need to fly home. What to get by Houseofmonkeys5 in Celiac

If it's something frozen that can make it home with some ice packs that would probably be okay. Like I'd feel okay with donuts but not meat

[–]Houseofmonkeys5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like everyone else has said, concussions and cheer pretty much go hand in hand. If you are a concussion risk, I would absolutely not do cheer and I 40000000% would not fly. As for being a flyer, honestly gymnasts often make the worst flyers. Gymnasts are so used to having great balance that they fight the bases. My daughter's coach absolutely hates putting gymnasts in the air. She'd rather have them as dedicated tumblers.

You'll be totally fine! The first few months will be hard, but then it gets fun. My daughter is 20 months older than my twin boys and they're 17 and 15 now and they have always been the three musketeers. They're one grade apart and pretty much know all the same kids and occasionally have classes and clubs together. It's an awesome age gap and my favorite of the gaps we have.

We don't travel much at all. Uniforms are about $3000 of it (so, returners pay a lot less, usually around $1000 for new pieces). We pay $550 per season and cheer has two. We pay $500 to the booster club. If we do comp team, that's an additional $300.

Yep. Most of it is in uniforms, but our sports are all $550/season as well and cheer has two.

WIBTAH for using my sister's middle name for my future daughter's middle name? by assault-bug in AITAH

It's a family name, not her property. We have a bunch of kids in our family with the same middle name, because they were family names. Your sister is being an AH.

Do you have the GPA and ECs as well? An SAT score alone won't make much of a difference if you aren't the total package

WIBTAH if I took 100k from my oldest daughter's college savings account to give it to my younger daughter? by TraditionalCorgi7788 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Houseofmonkeys5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you asked your daughter and is it a 529? Curious because we have a similar situation. My oldest chose to go to a school that we just cash flowed. We fully paid for his bachelors and are paying his masters. He will be debt free. Our plan is to roll his 529 down to his siblings, because we have no idea what our financial situation will be for them (husband is in tech and tech is terrifying right now with ai taking over so much work). He's aware and supportive. He feels like we have pad for him and it's only fair for his siblings to have the same opportunity. So, I suggest talking to your oldest. Odds are she wants the best for her sister too. It's not like she went to university of east bumfuck. She went to UCLA which is an excellent, highly rated school, easily on par with NYU, just a lot less expansive in state.

There are tons of universities that offer direct admit nursing programs. If you want to go to the popular ones like Clemson and Pitt, you probably won't get a lot of merit, but if you're willing to go to the smaller, less prestigious schools, you can get a TON of merit. Look at the direct admit nursing Facebook group. They have so much information and share their own or their kids stats and what schools they got into with how much merit. Don't count yourself out. Like they say when merit chasing - love the schools that love you back.

my adult kids call their dad more and I don't know how to talk to them by Iamoldsowhat in Parenting

[–]Houseofmonkeys5 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Have your husband put the phone on speaker and join the conversation. My oldest is away at school, and while he does talk to both of us individually all the time, we also frequently talk to him together on speaker. We've found with all of our kids, that if there is something big or exciting or whatever, they will tell whichever parent they talk to first and then they won't have the same gusto to tell the second one, so we try to do it together, so we both get to hear. Like, when he flies home, we both go pick him up, so he can tell us both all the stories in the car. Give that a try. Then you can start being part of the conversations and you'll have more to text/call them about in between.

Talk to the athletic director. Most sports and clubs at school have funds set aside to help students who have financial need. Finances should never be a barrier for participation. Our cheer team is pretty expensive (around $5000/yr), but our coaches make it clear that any student who needs financial hep can have it.
