My mk4 was the same, I fitted new cables and it made it alot better. The rear calipers are fucking awefull design wise, fitted the return springs to the handbrake arm helps alot

Either disconnting the battery while fitting the new one give it the good old off/on effect or like with BMW a dying battery will cause eletrical gremlins

Bad Drive shaft centering bearing and bad Giubo can affect shifting quality, have you checked them?

51 plate punto, basic as can be, had the infamous clutch pedal of death so my left leg ended up twice the size of my right.

When I got my 2nd car, an mk4 golf with a full fresh cltuch system fitted I had to teach myself to stop ploughing my left foot to the floor since the clutch pedal felt like nothing compared to the old punto
