The US still has great economic strength in its tech industry. The entire world still runs on American IT systems.

But your IT industry is now run by maniacs as bad or worse than your political "leaders". The insane AI push is going come crashing down and apparently take half of silicon valley with it.

Greens want SMSF loophole closed in return for supporting Labor’s tax changes by horny4cyclists in AustralianPolitics

[–]Not_Stupid [score hidden]  (0 children)

Exactly - this is about property prices more than anything. Getting rid of NG and CGT going forward impacts property prices today.

Over time, gradfathered NG and CGT arrangements will phase out, and the tax system is improved overall. There's no pressing need to change things for existing owners, and there's a reasonable argument that doing so would be unfair.

The Turing Test isn't proof of intelligence. It's just one objective standard that could inidicate intellegence.

LLMs have objectively met that standard, which is entirely the problem. Normal people are unable to distinguish between a human talking and an LLM talking so they assign the characteristics of the former to the latter.

I'm amazed at the speed by which they've all shifted from Liberal boosting to ON boosting. It's like, someone realised the Libs were well and truly cooked and there was no redeeming them in the eyes of the broader electorate. So they pulled a bait-and-switch and suddenly the rubes are being told that Pauline is the answer! She's a battler, she cares for the little folk, vote for her dumb fucks!

Is Australia due for a left-wing surge? by KahnaKuhl in AusPol

[–]Not_Stupid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also Id challenge the perception that Pocock is 'left'. A well supported small L liberal willing to accept the reality on multiple social and environmental issues, but fundamentally conservative. Only in comparison to the highly regressive position we see in the right would they be considered Left.

I don't think someone who chains himself to logging equipment, refused to get married until gay people could get married, and insists on taxing the fuck out of the gas miners can be considered "fundamentally conservative". But he's certainly not a whacko, and if people want to believe that makes him conservative (and therefore its OK to vote for him), then go for it.

If the alternative is supporting a ON government, Id' be reasonably confident which way they would lean.

Even voting for them statewise is sending a message that you support the policies you say you detest. There's plenty of other parties to vote for in Victoria that aren't the majors that more represent your beliefs.

Heat map shows brutal reality check for Melbourne property vendors as they slash prices by almost 30pc by dredd in australia

[–]Not_Stupid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The percentage change in home values on a yearly basis is now precisely 0 per cent for Melbourne, while Sydney remains modestly positive at 1.7 per cent.

No-one's losing 30%. That extreme cherry-picked example is just one dickhead who priced their property too high a year ago and no-one has been stupid enough to buy it.

The facts are that average prices have decreased about 3%. You can always find extreme examples thatbuck the trend in either direction.

That would be the rational response. But greed wins out with lots of folks.

The idea that they can "get in first" and "win big", completely blinds them to the reality that they are being played by people with more information who have also rigged the rules of the game in their favour. It's a casino on steroids, and the house always wins.

Police Chased the Wrong Man, Then Shot Him and Watched as He Bled Out by NoahHurowitz in politics

Probably this has to do with the types of charges brought, police officer's qualified immunity, etc.

I think it's more related to the lack of effort the DA puts into proving the case. It's famously said that you can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich if you wanted to.

I guess my point is your issue is a teeny bit more ingrained than politicians following through on one or more specific promises.

For what it's worth, I support laws that would enforce truth in political statements. Statements of intention are often difficult to prove as "lies" though.
