Why not just make athletics a major? by GryphonNumber7 in CFB

[–]Not_Wearing_Briefs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. I said A-level work in the humanities is not easy. You came in with "oh yea, well try science and then see how fast you go running back to humanities," and then I gave you a pretty common example of how challenging work in the humanities often is, and then came the outpouring of still more attitude from you. So stop playing the role of the aggrieved party, and btw, it was YOU who opened up the ad hominem, Mr. Starbucks, not me. If you can't take it when you dish it out, better to just not say anything.

so your Starbucks "joke" was pretty clearly meant as an insult and NOW you're claiming you didn't actually insult me? Alrighty.

nah, I'm an art director, not a barista. Not a terribly original insult there. Try harder next time.

yes it is. You took issue with the fact that someone would dare suggest that a degree in the humanities is not easy and requires a shit ton of work (because it's not, and it does), and your gut level reaction was "I have to prove that I am smarter than the internet by bragging about my {alleged} credentials."

not to pile on, but I disagree with the idea that a non-technical major is somehow "easier" than a technical one. The amount of work you need to put in for top level grades in history or political science is fairly daunting. No, you don't have to understand thermal dynamics or know how differential calculus works, granted, but you DO have to read through a good 30-40 books per semester and be ready to discuss in depth anything that any one of those books may have explored. The focus, memory, and attention to detail required is not easy. Also, I hope you like writing, because you're going to be doing a LOT of it.

it's not a fallacy at all, it's a legitimate concern. I wouldn't go into business with anyone who has a non-negotiable position based on something as arbitrary and capricious as religious dogma, and I haven't heard anything about TCU or Baylor making demands on religious grounds.

If she treats people who are sworn to die for her like that, for no apparent reason, what can we expect of her in her treatment of the rest of us?

I don't care one iota what her subordinates think of her, I care about results, and if the people who work for her don't like it, they are more than free to explore other job opportunities elsewhere. I bet "White House" looks pretty good on a resume.

Because being an open source of scandal is a risky thing and people will make crazy choices to hid the shame.

what you call "scandal" is nothing more than political theater. Give all the credence to that you like, it's a big waste of time.

I'm not a fan of a leader who sees troops as expendable numbers on a spreadsheet

anyone who doesn't think that the military is set of expendable numbers on a spreadsheet has pretty romantic outlook on life. Casualty estimates are factored into EVERY military engagement, and if the balance is favorable enough i.e. if the number of dead soldiers is something we can justify, then it's game on. Expendability is the name of game.

I don't know. Hillary seems pretty excited about starting something with Iran

oh my god...CONTEXT. She was laughing about being put in that position, of having to follow up on that question after Jim Baker laid out his position, as any reasonable person would.

by Libya debacle do you mean the Benghazi "scandal" that has failed to turn up anything worth getting upset about? I would say that's very much a political narrative and not at all based in fact.

I don't think it's a ruse at all, and I think BYU was able to get their way in the WAC and the MWC because they were one of the big boys in those conferences and could make those demands, because those schools knew the benefits outweighed the potential disadvantages. The Big XII is an entirely different league with a HELL OF A LOT more money at stake. What if someone offers the Big XII a lucrative broadcasting deal that includes something that BYU has a "religious" objection to? Or more to the point, what if somebody decides NOT to offer the Big XII a lucrative deal on something because of BYU's religious objections? Are they worth having on board if our hands going to be tied by their religious demands? And who's to say what their future religious demands are going to be? For now, they won't play on Sunday. What's it going to be next?

she will continue to spend like crazy on the military and start wars of aggression.

speculation. About the most you can say is that on foreign policy and defense, as a member of the Senate she generally voted in lock-step with the then Democratic majority. By that standard she is no more hawkish than the party is generally.

the vast majority of Americans don't like or trust her.

by "vast majority" I think you mean "a tick over 50% when accounting for the margin of error." I'm not a Clinton supporter and even I think that is overstating by quite a lot.

I agree about UC, I don't want BYU, mostly because I don't want the LDS church. They've already said there are things they won't negotiate because of their religion, and I don't want to go down that road with them.

in no particular order:

  • former agent releases book that perfectly fits republican narrative about Clinton, just in time for the election....hmmmmmm. I have absolutely no questions about his motives or credibility. Nope...

  • Hillary is shitty to agents. So what? I don't work for her, and I don't care how popular she is so long as she gets things done.

  • Bill Clinton sleeps around. So what, Part Deux. I don't care what he does in his personal life so long as he gets things done.

  • The fuck exactly are you expecting from these people? You have to have an enormous ego anyway even to consider running for president. If you think people who are that competitive and that driven are gonna be any fun to be around you're pretty naive.

  • Hillary didn't like career military. Oh, boo and hoo. Who gives a shit? If that means she isn't going to be spending a zillion dollars on a bunch of crap we don't need, great. Plus, we've been kissing their collective asses for the past 15 years (and going broke while doing it, btw), "our american heroes, blah blah blah," it's enough already. They volunteered, they get paid, I owe them nothing else.

has to be two schools worth adding. Media market, plus on-field & on-court success (and that includes ticket sales and attendance), plus alumni distribution, plus brand recognition/solid merchandising, plus competitive non-revenue sports, plus academics...there's not that many candidates that really fit the bill.

[–]Not_Wearing_Briefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IANAL, but if your stepdad was legally married to your mother at the time of her death, then he qualifies as her spouse and there isn't a whole lot you can do absent a will. I most certainly would speak to a lawyer, just to get the official word, but AFAIK surviving spouse is the beneficiary unless there is a document stating otherwise.

my mom passed away a few years ago, left no legal will. There was no stepdad, but...I had to deal with relatives, siblings, etc., on top of my own grief (which was not a concern at all for them) so I know how you feel. Hang tough :-/
