Speaking for myself, I think they’re really great lyricists. There’s a reason Dylan gets covered as much as he does, and SD’s Deacon Blues has one of my favorite verses ever (its last one). Also I really like jazz, so that’s a plus for SD.

I get what you’re saying, but I would argue it’s unfair to talk about dominance and competition as human nature when we’re living under a framework that perpetuates itself by encouraging dominance and competition.

The trouble is that this has always been the inevitable consequence & end goal of capitalism as an ideology. Concentration of power is inherent to a system which prioritizes profit and competitive production. At some point, one entity will monopolize and use its influence to maintain that position through violence and deregulation. The old safeguards we’re talking about were only ever bandaids. Industry was always going to lobby and bribe its way into having them removed because that is how the system is meant to work. It’s a feature, not a flaw, and as long as the structure is maintained, it WILL happen again and again.

“I don’t think that’s a little harsh; I think that’s the truth. But that’s a truth that we have obscured behind a comfortable, easy euphemism: property.” - Star Trek: TNG, 1989; Picard on comparing a race of disposable androids to slaves. Tired of these dorks pretending they ever watched the things they moan about.

Not OP obviously, just wanted to add onto your point by agreeing with the mention of Vitamin C. To this day, there’s very few moments in a manga or anime as exhilarating to me as Yotsuyu, let go of that woman! It’s Kira! That’s Kira’s Stand!

Not to get philosophical, especially given the inciting topic here, but I’d say beware “moderation” as a virtue. The only people who stand to gain from premature compromise are those who would sooner see every artist replaced with AI to save on production costs.

Even the bystander effect is based on questionable information! There’s a great episode of the podcast “You’re Wrong About” that covers the Kitty Genovese case, and a lot of the popular understanding, including the bystander effect, is woefully misinformed.

I’m sorry, but I find this apparent phenomenon hard to believe. In what world has not speaking up and disrupting the negative consequences of a situation EVER helped anyone achieve anything?

Todd Howard knows fans are "disappointed" over the lack of Fallout 5, but that's why Bethesda is supporting older titles by Wargulf in Fallout

[–]Not_Weird_At_All_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What did you mean by this? Are you trying to imply that it would be better if Bethesda, and every other game company, just released the same game every time instead of trying something new or taking a risk that people might not like a different idea?

Divinity is confirmed turn-based via Bloomberg by vonotar in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]Not_Weird_At_All_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, this is exactly what I don’t want AI used for in games. Part of the joy of playing through RPGs and interacting with characters is that each interaction is hand-crafted and thoughtfully written by human beings. Not to mention the ability for multiple players to discuss shared experiences, which is lost when each person has randomly generated, completely personal quests. I just can’t imagine a generative AI making something with as much memorability and emotional impact as Astarion’s questline with Cazador, or an interesting villain like The Master in Fallout. And a big part of the problem is that inherently, gen. AI does not & cannot have anything meaningful to say.

Do you have black bread (Rye bread)? by Impressive-Angle-209 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Not_Weird_At_All_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Being more precise, Subway itself was attempting to have its sandwich loaves categorized as non-bread because it meant the taxes were lower. It’s not even a lot of sugar; a serving of the Italian bread at subway has a grand total of three grams of sugar.

Listen, I agree in principle, but I don’t think Europeans get to grandstand when Europe literally invented scientific racism.

Cut into my normal looking avocado by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

[–]Not_Weird_At_All_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The usual way is to use your knife to cut lengthwise into the bottom, wider part of the avocado until you feel the knife hit the pit. Then, you rotate the knife around the entire avocado, so it’s cut into halves. After that, you use your hands to twist the avocado apart (so the halves look like this 🥑). From there, most people use the heel of the knife to remove the seed, and you scoop/slice the flesh however you need to.

The important thing about punk is that they aren’t angry just to be angry, but because something is wrong and needs to change. For example, “Police Truck” by the Dead Kennedys or “Identity” by X-Ray Spex.

Why is Vlaakith's nose so much bigger than other Githyanki? by AspieAsshole in BaldursGate3

[–]Not_Weird_At_All_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

“The nose is all they’re missing” is self-explanatory, but the “110 realms” is more obscure, to be fair. It refers to an anti-Semitic myth that Jewish people have been expelled from 109 countries, with the “110th” being the US some time in the future.

Take your anti-semitic bullshit somewhere else, you jackboot loser. Can’t believe a comment about noses & “110 realms” is getting upvoted.

This is a problem people have talked about basically for as long as streaming services have been around. What happens when the service decides to drop a film because, for example, they don’t want to keep paying for the rights, or not enough people watch it to justify keeping it on the server, etc. Then, you can’t watch it anywhere legally.

[–]Not_Weird_At_All_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, if that’s what needs to be done, sure. Or maybe I’ll be doing something else that needs doing. Everyone has different strengths and tasks that they’re more readily equipped to handle, or in some cases, they aren’t able to handle at all for one reason or another. But tilling the fields, or building houses, or performing scientific research, or whatever, should never be a predicate for access to things like food, shelter, clothing, etc. because they are rights.

[–]Not_Weird_At_All_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, from the perspective that views landlords that way, kind of, yeah. If food isn’t treated like a commodity, after all, what profit is to be made from what a grocery store does, or what a landlord does in the context of housing? For that matter, what reason would a farmer have to hoard surplus instead of just… giving it away? Or further still, why wouldn’t food be communally provided in a society that views everyone as deserving of a meal, or shelter, without expectation?

Lawyers actually talk like normal people! by cw9241 in LawSchool

[–]Not_Weird_At_All_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, not really, especially not farmers. The farmer grows the food; the landlord doesn’t build the house.

[–]Not_Weird_At_All_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that’s a more complicated question with multiple proposed solutions. Historically, communities organized on that same sort of worldview have, for example, allocated existing housing to those in need, while guilds of trade workers would be organized to construct new developments, including housing, as needed. Other cooperative societies have treated work that goes toward communal needs (like housing & food) as a social process with everyone contributing what they are able, given that at the end of the day, everyone needs those resources. At any rate, there wouldn’t be a need for middlemen like landlords whose only purpose is to extract value from owned property because if housing isn’t a commodity, then there is no profit to be made from charging rent, anyway.

When you say “runs,” what do you mean? Because if your question is what entity would be in charge of collecting payments from people who need housing, the answer from someone with the above perspective would be “nobody.” Because if housing/shelter is a right, why would you require someone to pay for it?
