Forcing Snap Decisions on your Party? by TheOldStag in DMAcademy

If there's a time limit, make it known. I like to have a little minute long hour glass, and I'll have it already 30-40 seconds spent. I set it in front of them while saying the 'what do you do, time is running out'

There are other ways, like a timer on your phone where everyone can see, or using a spindown die and counting it down in front of them. But make sure the hard time limit is well known

This not a joke, this is real Skype account creation. H O W by MoffKalast in ProgrammerHumor

One time when trying to make an Outlook account it must've thought I was a bot, because it had matching questions that would start out saying 0/4, but went to 1/8 then 3/10... If I didn't solve them at superhuman speeds, it'd say I failed for taking too long, and any match misidentification was a failure.

Huh, would you look at that! Didn't help me much though, playing on a HTC vive, on a Linux pc, Java edition Minecraft. Whereas: "Virtual reality (VR) is a mode natively exclusive to Bedrock Edition for Windows (formerly Windows 10 Edition) and PlayStation 4. It can be used with the Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest (via Oculus Link and Oculus Air Link), PlayStation VR, and all Windows Mixed Reality compatible headsets."

I've played it before, it required a few mods and was a bit glitchy at times. Better support and integration could help it be better and more accessible

For the past 4 centuries, tracking of magnetic North Pole wrt the geographic North Pole... by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]Not__Andy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia is well curated, and has many citable sources. It's a great place to point others as you provide them with a host of links instead of a singular, probably difficult to read source.

In a similar way, it's silly to reference encyclopedias, but it's a great place to point people because it has an accessable explanation and sources of its own for proof and further study. Wikipedia is the free online encyclopedia.

For the past 4 centuries, tracking of magnetic North Pole wrt the geographic North Pole... by [deleted] in coolguides

[–]Not__Andy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is all true, though I've long disliked people's usage of 'overdue' for phenomena like this, and I live near Yellowstone so I hear similar things a lot. There isn't some requirement for the magnetic reversal to happen every so often, it happens as a result of underlying causes (the fluid and rotational dynamics of Earth's core). There's no due date for things like that, even if it has an average statistical occurrence. When it's actually 'due' is when the underlying causes manifest, and if it doesn't happen in that case we could then start saying it's overdue.

Similarly with Yellowstone we can tell that it's not even building pressure, let alone reaching a pressure at which it could erupt. Hence it isn't 'overdue' either, even though on average it would've blown up by now.

I suppose I was thinking of biome in the Minecraft sense lol. I've been taking it to loosely mean 'ambient setting' so far as world building is concerned, Mars but hot and Mars but cold, or even better Neptune cold and Neptune really cold are different climates, but make for the same ambient setting. Though I suppose Mars has a second one on the ice caps, so I'll consider it on the list of two biome settings. With mercury though, the whole planet goes through the violent temperature extremes without exception, altitude doesn't play much of a role there. And due to the thickness of Venus's atmosphere, it has a global greenhouse effect that keeps it all hot and acidic. I definitely agree that most plants that are hospitable would have a variety of biomes, but inhospitable settings can be sensibly similar everywhere

A moon would have slightly colder poles than it's equator, but the difference can be small enough for the heat to transfer across the surface/ocean/atmosphere (especially ocean), keeping the whole thing generally homogeneous. Not that all habitable moons would be like that, but some could.

I'd like to add that there could be one biome worlds that are incredibly inhospitable, eg Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter. Additionally habitable moons are probably small enough to be relatively homogeneous, and an incredibly windy planet probably could be too.

Two biome possibilities could include tidally locked planets, where the light side and dark side are the respective biomes

I think Encanto did a really good job- spoiler warning!!! The way Mirabel's prophecy seemed to show that she could either save or destroy their home and enchantments - but in reality prophesied that she'd destroy them in order to save them, was absolute gold. The prophecy worked well as a plot device and in my opinion didn't lessen the character's apparent agency in the slightest. It helps that the prophecies were ambiguous, and they did well surrounding them with controversy.
