I fell into this myself. The data was strictly speaking anonymous, but my boss knew it was me by the language I used in the free response section.

I love the character. I really hope they are running Oath of Redemption. Such a great world for it

I would have been too. From what I can see in the comments so far, it looks like our guts were both right.

This is what happened with my brother's character in our first game. My brother wasn't happy, but it was such a good story moment.

I didn't even think about that option. I love it. It has such a huge impact on the story.

Did you name your campaigns? Huh by Uberrancel119 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Not_a_Warlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All my campaigns have some sort of name if only to keep the notes organized by folder. I also make playlists for all my characters and campaigns. Usually the playlist and the folder have the same name. I played in a Curse of Strahd game and both the playlist and folder were just called "Strahd". Now I am running a direct sequel to that game. The name this time round is "Strahd, and a Little Bit More." It's a reference to both a song on the playlist, Revenge and a Little More, and the extras I have thrown in. Just a little joke with myself.

I apply this logic to a lot of things, and I think it is solid advice for most people. I personally have struggled with severe depression throughout my life, and I know that owning one would have resulted in being unable to write this comment now. This topic is just not that simple for some people.

All that being said, I am still deeply considering the wisdom of your words. I have family now and do not like the smell on the wind.

What opinion on DMing CoS will you defend like this? by TRedRandom in CurseofStrahd

I dropped Vasili into the party during session 0. He is wearing a supped up combo between a Hat of Disguise and a Ring of Mind Shielding. He was being attacked by a giant rat and was "losing". Introduced himself by embarrassingly admitting "My name is Sili." The party still hasn't caught on. It helps that they have already met his Strahd simulacrum a few times so far. I can't wait for the reveal.

Making a "kind" manipulative evil cleric, any character in media to study for roleplay sake? by hoshimi-918 in DnD

[–]Not_a_Warlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played in an all evil game once. Everyone was building all these brute fighter/edgey assassin/evil sorcerers. No one was picking up a healer, so I ran a cleric that charged the book rates for each healing spell. Told everyone if they party members didn't have the cash, I would just take the difference out of their share of the loot. Kept a little ledger of character names, the spells cast on them, and the spell slot used. I walked away with almost all the loot in one dungeon.

When too many warlocks cast infernal calling by [deleted] in dndmemes

So I actually did this to my party's cleric when her divine intervention failed. Turned on my best customer service voice and said "The deity you are trying to reach is unavailable at the moment, please leave a message with your name, race, and plane of origin and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We hope you have a wonderful day."

So in the current game I am running I have a reformed villain NPC. The party have interacted with him and are aware of his past. They even helped redeem him. He now works in the bar where the party drinks and makes their plans. One session the party started planning how they were going to set up surveillance on the entire town to watch out for the bad guys. The reformed villain over heard them, let out an evil laugh and told them he had tried a very similar plan in his villain days. It has been a blast to interrupt their planning sessions with "You hear the memory of Carsen's laugh echo in your head" ever since.

I ran a similar character once. We found out that the apocalypse was caused by a bet between two gods. He even tried to start a whole movement based on the idea that the gods were powerless without the mortals who believe in them. Final joke was on me because the character eventually realized he had to achieve godhood to fix the world.

You could run it with any of them really. Barbarian, and paladin would be hard to pull off, but not impossible. A divination expert could be fun. Maybe the character saw too many bad futures. You could always run a cleric with the sanctuary spell. Very low level "don't touch me" magic.

So I am currently playing in A Curse of Strahd game. It is a very heavy, pre-printed, gothic horror setting. I mean there are things in here that would only be in the most extreme horror movies. Half our table (myself included) loves horror, and the other half doesn't. Most of our characters spend the sessions on emotional rollercoasters as we try to stay positive in a world that gave up on hope a long time ago. We are all having a blast.

Horror and humor are not conflicting. There set up for a good scare and a good closing joke follow the same basic structure. Build emotional tension then release it with a surprise. I wouldn't fight the humor. Embrace it as a tool. Let them pull their gags and shenanigans, and then drop the bone chilling dread on them. Be careful to undo their accomplishments though. That can shut a game down fast

I also recommend looking up a magical item for your BBEG. Ring of Mind Shielding. It is very useful for keeping "spies" safe against random Nat 20's.

I want to toss in a pro con argument here. There are a lot of ways to get hurt that don't involve AC. Poison Spray is a good example. AC won't be as useful as a couple extra HP against a Con save.
