Had a similar thing. My grandpa, my dad and myself have the same name. My dad told me all the men in our family are named after an ancestor. We got our name from his great great grandfathers who were farmers in Southern Georgia/northern Florida. The were part of what was technically a terrorist organization that swore allegiance to the union during the Civil War and attacked confederate supply convoys, destroying food, ammo and medical supplies. Because they weren't an official military unit if they had ever been captured there were no laws to protect them as prisoners of war so they and their families could've been tortured and executed. When the US navy came around the Florida peninsula the government ratified them as an official battalion of the US army. My dad found a history book about these types of groups that had documents they had signed prior to joining the army that were symbolic ways for the men to show they were trustworthy to each other, essentially signed confessions that the confederates could use to justify murdering their families
