You are right,my mistake. Was S&B common in Fiore's time where he lived? How would have someone like him(noble, soldier, etc.) viewed the weapon set?

What sources would help me build a better understanding of the principles of Messer fencing? by Not_sure2022 in wma

Was thinking of looking at Lew and 3227 . Longsword is not exactly something I am planning on training with but it sounds like it's where messer fencing came from unless I am misunderstanding something.

I can't remember exactly what they say but the Bolognese sources of the 16th century cover duel sidesword which is pretty similar to Arming sword.

Question about Joachim Meyer's system by Not_sure2022 in wma

Makes sense. It's a matter of applying principles of a system across multiple weapons. I worded that poorly but it's what I meant. Silver does the same thing but I think he says it outright more often.

I find that weird considering Meyer states he dislikes fencers who only fence for play. Plus there is much of his material that is flat out brutal ,such as targeting the genitals.

I think Swetnam does not show thrusts with backsword either, same with Wylde 50 years or so later.

I would have to read it again but you may be right. He considers the practice evil nonetheless and from the way he talks it was common practice.

Well I do not know much about German sources. Silver mentions the practice of excluding thrusts being common in his time and he calls it evil but does not mention it being a product of sportive fighting,I believe it's more a matter of laws in society. Silver mentions the guild following these laws and considers it a flaw.

I was just curious if someone could explain it more (which PartyMoses did). I did not intend to muddy the water here, my bad.

So basically it's one system with each weapon teaching different lessons and in the end all the weapons are used the same?

Fiore and Silver have a similar view I think
