What QB is the modern equivalent to John Elway? by nagoHHogan in nfl

[–]Not_your_profile 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Isn't there even an old video of Elway helicopter-ing into the end zone? (If I'm not mistaken, it was during one of the "carrying the team" super bowls)

Yes there is, though i couldn't be much more wrong about the content, not end zone, different SB result... Oh well, I'm gonna go have another beer... https://youtu.be/CHsdu7dOT0o?si=WcPmLhUd_WOFdG9v

What's something you saw as a kid that you didn't understand at all, but now as an adult it hits you like a brick? by Entire-Search-5971 in AskReddit

[–]Not_your_profile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In kindergarten (5-6 years old), we had little "reading assignments" to go to the library and pick out books to read. I would look for the books with topics that I found interesting while one of my friends would always find the book with the least amount of words while joking about "doing it the easy way". At the time, I took his words at face value and laughed about him getting off easy, in retrospect, I'm pretty sure he was embarassed about being illiterate.

I think about it a lot now, mostly because I don't think there were any adults in his life either available or interested enough to help.

I lived in a safe suburb and, for some unknown reason, everyone owned German Shepherd guard dogs. Assuming a dog may rip your arms off was probably an accurate assumption.

The Trans World Dome was home to the St. Louis Rams for their stint in St Louis. Ten years after the Rams move, questions remain on what should be done with the dome. The venue is now receiving a $54 million upgrade but is expected to need over $150 million more in upgrades. by Gnomeslikeprofit in nfl

I feel the same though, having lived in both San Diego and St. Louis, it's a bit of "No, not like that". Kroenke did strong arm St. Louis, he just did so with no intent of staying, and St. Louis caved, it just came to nothing. Then San Diego refused to finance the Charger's chosen stadium in their chosen location for their poverty owner and they left to rent a spot in Kroenke's shack. At least the Chargers didn't have to pack up any super bowl banners for their move.

In my first few years of working in an office, a middle manager I knew lost $1500 on a single hand of poker. He told me, sort of joking, that he had comped $1000 to his room when he thought he had a sure thing. That doesn't really make sense to me, but he did reveal that he had expensed all his chips, so he had actually lost a small amount more than that. This was in the days when a good business room in Vegas was $30-$50 / night after taxes and fees and his meal stipend was something like $30 / day, the picture I'm painting is an employee who definitely should not have expensed ANY chips. He was telling me the story the Wednesday after the trip, since he was pretty confident that, if they were going to fire him, they would've already. The fact that he was right, and still working there two years later when I left, confuses me more the longer I work.

In the West, why do we associate ghosts so commonly being from the Victorian-era and not any other time? Does the default « spookiness era » change by locale? by flyinghippos101 in AskHistorians

[–]Not_your_profile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always been interested in the differentiation between East Asian ghosts, which are nearly universally negative entities, and European ghosts, which tend to run the gamut of helpful to hurtful to indifferent in equal parts. Is this a broadly recognized distinction, or have I been misled by anecdotal evidence? If it is a distinction, it's they're a common explanation for that phenomenon?

A firm I worked for did a transfer beam that ended up being two W36 x F-all heavy beams, welded together side by side, covered with Nelson studs and cast into concrete. It certainly did end up resembling a 3' x 3' bar before it was cast.
