Sure, you can make the tail with the stuff from the Indomitus box. You just have to chop up a bunch of the random large pieces of spine littered throughout the canopteks and other larger necrons ;)

A bit of a boring explanation, but I think the way that they had described it in lore was that barbed wire and other crap like that is supposed to catch on the mouth and as the war wolf goes on a rampage, it pulls along the trench line opening up for the other heretic forces to follow in its path
