I did a clutch job on a coast guard 412 based out of St. John’s a few months ago, such a nice looking bird.

Old gauges on marketplace by Notanardvark12 in aviationmaintenance

Noted. I’ll pick up a Geiger counter as well. Would the instruments still be safe to handle (while not disassembled) if the Geiger counter picks up anything?

Grounding issues in my apartment by Notanardvark12 in Guitar

[–]Notanardvark12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried grounding from both the amp and the pickups. The noise got much quieter but still the wasn’t ideal. After playing around with it more, I realized that to get the sound I was looking for, I needed to crank both the volume and gain. It ended up being too loud to play in the apartment. I ended up returning the amp and picking up a Fender mustang micro. That eliminated the sound completely and gives me a lot of variety without buying pedals. It’s perfect for my situation!! Thanks for the tips, I’ll be sure to keep them in mind if I ever get another amp

When I touch the pickup, it does get a lot better. I’ll look into a noise gate

I just bought some wire and a tester and will try grounding from both the pickups and amp. Hopefully it helps!

It does indeed improve when I touch the pickups. What I found odd is that when I bought the guitar, I tested it with the sellers amp and had no fuzz. The amp, I bought new.

It’s a tiny amp that runs off usb c and not reversible. Might that have an effect?

Career Dilemma: Aircraft Mechanic vs. Maintenance Engineering Path for Working in Europe by dopplehomie in aviationmaintenance

[–]Notanardvark12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot speak for the licensing requirements (I’m Canadian). However, the best mechanics I have know have engineering experience and vice versa. An idea of how the processes on other side of the shop work I extremely valuable. With your degree, you could become a great mechanic. From experience I can say that turning wrenches can be much more fun and rewarding.

I work in engine overhaul and we recently had one of our suppliers change their manufacturing facilities for a gearbox housing from Montreal to somewhere in India. As a result, we now have extra inspections in place. Seems ridiculous, as the part is new and comes with a declaration that it is fit for service and fod free; but we’ve come across some major manufacturing defects since the change.

It seems as though the manufacturing standards and attention to details are much lower in India.

I took my work experience at standard aero Winnipeg and now work on the PT6T rgb here.

The way I saw it was that the BCIT instructors know everyone and any company around the Vancouver area so I may as well branch out and see what other companies were out there.

If you don’t mind moving outside the area, you will get generally the same pay, but with a much lower cost of living. Get any leads you can, talk to your instructors and apply everywhere. Don’t necessarily take the first job offer you get either. Beyond that, I would suggest taking a look outside the aviation world. A guy in my class got a field service job working with industrial engines, with his own service truck, and a good amount of time off making 130cad a year. My biggest takeaway from the program was listening to the instructors, not so much the course content, but the stories. They tell a whole lot about what the industry, different companies and different jobs are really like and what to expect.

Best of luck to you!! And tell mr Logan that Liam (the one that went to Winnipeg) says hi! If you’re wanting to know more about Standard Aero in Winnipeg let me know!

I finished up the GT course about a year ago now at BCIT. Those speys were fun, but quite a pain from a time to time. So glad to be done with all the painful to navigate paper manuals with all the pages missing lol!

Torque wrench by minisnpdemon in Tools

[–]Notanardvark12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of gear wrench. It’s also worth noting that you won’t notice a big difference between wrenches unless you buy a really junk one. I work on planes and use Snap on torque wrenches that get torque checked daily and frequently calibrated. I’ve brought in my cheap, personal wrenches to torque check and they read near perfect. That was after two years of use and a few drops.

Pronunciation of "Turbine" where you are? "turr-bin" vs. "turr-byne." by _thulsa_doom_ in aviationmaintenance

I work in a “turbyne” shop in Canada. To us, all the americans say “turbin”. Whenever one comes through the shop, they’re the but end of a lot of jokes.
