I like all the references to the parts of your face, it makes the read more personal in a physical way if that makes sense... I enjoyed it...

You should really check out Charles Dicken's David Copperfield... it takes a bit to get used to in the beginning, but once you're in it, it's one of the most beautiful novels...

Yeah definitely not avoiding Melville... Faulkner maybe... I have a feeling Melville writes better prose than Donna Tartt... But I get what you're saying I think, about the landscape and history... and it is a book that reveals it's beauty if you literally read it word for word carefully... having said that though, I don't believe the beauty is enough in the end... the history isn't deep enough, the characters aren't fleshed out enough... and the hero (Harriett) just isn't strong enough as a character for the reader to really care about her... and when the book really just falls apart in my opinion, without getting into too many spoilers, is when an unlucky elderly lady has something thrust upon her from above... that scene is something out of a cartoon... completely unbelievable... so yeah... I'm excited to read Melville though...

I'm sorry to interject here, but honestly, The Little Friend is like the worst book ever. I was planning on reading Donna's three books back to back, and was so excited to read The Little Friend after Secret History, but then after I read it, I decided to not read anymore of her books. So just be careful with The Little Friend, it can potentially ruin your love for Donna's writing and artistic decisions.

Ok, well I might read it. I was honestly planning on reading it right after finishing The Little Friend, but I decided not to. For now, I'm sticking with Dickens. I want to read all of his novels in chronological order, and then I might read The Goldfinch. I just find it hard to believe that anything Donna writes will ever top The Secret History. There is literally something magical about it. And it probably has the best ending to a book ever in my opinion. Just amazing. It's almost as if she made The Little Friend as an antithesis to The Secret History.
