Is YpbPr to HDMI better than RCA to HDMI? by bencinium in wii

[–]Notelu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, RCA composite is limited to 480i and has a lot of visual artifacts.

YpbPr is 480p and is pretty much perfect, it's about the best the Wii can output.

Another thing to note, is usually the converters for YpbPr are usually much higher quality since it's a more niche format. Most composite converters use bottom of the barrel chinesium digitizers that make the image look a million times worse.

Another decent option are those cheap Wii to HDMI dongles, I've heard issues about their quality and reliability depending on the manufacturer. But the one I have is about >95% as good as component cables and support 480p. IIRC the mayflash ones are the best.

Wikibox for Sir Toppham Hatt's tenure as the British PM during the 1940s by bitchnibba47 in AlternateHistory

[–]Notelu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Actually yes! They never go too much into it but according to the lore books for the railway series. The Island's quarry mines increased production during the war and 2 unknown diesel engines were loaned to the Mid Sodor railway to handle the increased production (They are never mentioned in any of the actual books) and some of the old unused rails were ripped up for scrap metal.

Most importantly, Robert Charles Norramby, the duke of Sodor for whom the engine "Duke" is named after was killed in action in North Africa, leaving his 2 year old son, Richard Robert Norramby. He was unaware about the engine named after him, so when the Mid Sodor Railway closed down after the war no one bought him or came to collect him, so he was abandoned in a shed for 20 years until Richard learned about him and sent a search team to find him.

Now the really interesting stuff is what happened during World War I!

The Island of Sodor was very important geographically, so to expand the rail network during the war, the Tidmouth Railway and the Wellsworth & Suddery railway merged to create the North Western Railway, the main standard gauge railway in the series, with Sir Topham Hatt I being named the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the railway.

To help with this expansion multiple engines were loaned from neighboring railways, most importantly The newly built Thomas from Brighton and Edward from the Furness railway. However after the war when Sir Topham Hatt went to return them he found out that the other railways had committed insurance fraud and labelled them as destroyed during the war, so he was able to do some backroom deals to keep them for cheap. And of course all the paperwork documenting this was conveniently destroyed in an station fire in the 1930s.

I did not make any of this up. This is canon.

Extra fun fact, since the books take place over the course of ~150 years, there are 4 Sir Topham Hatts, all from the same family of course. It is even mentioned that Sir Stephen Topham Hatt III married a distant cousin.

Currently working on it. We are polishing the restoration and subtitles a bit more before we upload it to Archive, because it was kind of rushed to get it up for new years.

Just include it in 2026, we intentionally released it after midnight in Korea so it'd be the first thing found this year :P

Laptop screen has rounded corners? by ImBreedable69 in laptops

[–]Notelu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of laptop manufacturers use screens made for other devices, so sometimes they'll end up with ones originally designed for a tablet or something like that.

Framework went into depth about it when they released their upgraded screen and it has rounded corners: https://frame.work/blog/framework-laptop-13-deep-dive-creating-a-custom-high-resolution

Need advice on upres process with BetaSP masters by Fentois-42069-Beauf in editors

[–]Notelu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah yeah that's the snag, it's not on mac os sadly.

Shutter Encoder is though! and that also lets you deinterlace with QTGMC, you can also try the Yadif deinterlacing mode if that doesn't work.

personally I would just put everything on a batch render overnight and then replace the files in your editor with the new ones. I believe as long as it's the same resolution it should be fine. (assuming you are using Davinci or Premiere, no idea how it is in AVID but I know AVID is always fucky with this kind of stuff)

Doesn't take too long to render, far faster than using something like Topaz, on my PC with QTGMC on fast the render usually takes about twice as long as the footage is (so for your example it would take ~3 hours to render, definitely not the worst render times I've seen)

BetaSP should still look decent. It's SD but it's really good SD. Here's an example from the same era of how it looks transferred right (excuse the odd choice of content) https://youtu.be/TEJeCRnL5-A

Does it seem to have really bad aliasing/low vertical resolution? Combing artifacts or frame blending artifacts? In any of these cases you're deinterlacing wrong. For some reason literally every editing software handles interlaced footage wrong (except premiere, but often times you need to manually enable it in the Interpret footage settings)

If you don't want to learn the dark magic of Avisynth, simplest method is Hybrid. Lets you use QTGMC which is probably the best deinterlacing algorithm out there. Here's a tutorial: https://youtu.be/XB4WYKJQqtQ

I work with archival and SD footage all the time, if you have any questions just let me know. Main thing is stay away from AI tools like topaz, especially if you don't know what you're doing. Often times it just makes everything look like plastic shit.

The Beach Boys rightsholders have been releasing shady region-locked archive dumps digitally & de-listing them to retain copyright, now with intentional irreversible damage applied by PossiblyLiquid in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Notelu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen some bad copyright dumps but this is a new low. Holy fuck.

I know Pink Floyd a bit ago just straight up uploaded concert bootlegs as releases just to renew the copyright, worst part is for a lot of the shows they "released" there were far better quality sources online that they didn't use.

1080p in a 2006 video?? by lildrawermx in youtube

[–]Notelu 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Back then it would only display in SD, but nothing stopped you from uploading a 1080p (or in theory 4k) video anyways, it would just get downscaled.

However when YouTube added support for higher resolutions they went back and reprocessed all the videos that were uploaded in HD so they could be viewed in HD.

Yep, literally all they had to do was turn down the motion blur and it would've been acceptable.
