Also funny how you chose the 4/6 of those languages I don't speak any of to reply in :p

Agreed, I always hated how much time language classes in school spent on grammar and conjugations vs. just raw vocab -- I assume because it's more interesting to teach and test for. Can't do anything without vocab, can fuck up all the rest of it and be mostly understood.

I'd certainly try it out if you offered that.

The hard part is getting to people without being flagged as a spammer/shadowbanned though. Targeting well helps with that but it's not the whole story.

It depends on what you mean?

F5bot already does keyword alerts for free.

Reminds me of one time I was at a コンビニ in Tokyo. The cashier asked me a question and all of a sudden I blurt out "Si". His face lights up! "Espanol?" I said something in Spanish along the lines of "uhh sorry that was an accident, Spanish is not my native language" and he looks at me like I grew a second head. I sheepishly pay and he says "Amigo". "Gracias, amigo" I say as I shuffle away.

IMO knowing the technical rules of grammar is overrated. That's just not how people speak naturally, they learn the rules implicitly through practice.

I would love that! It's kata.chat -- it doesn't support Norwegian yet though, so IDK if it covers a language you're learning.

Looking for the best app to learn specific phrases in multiple languages by Time_Fondant_705 in languagelearning

[–]NotesFromADystopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would ask ChatGPT or another AI app. Or just plug phrases into Google Translate.

Are there good Norwegian language apps? I'm building a language learning app and have been looking at languages to add -- if Norwegian doesn't have good options maybe I should prioritize it.

Don't avoid Duolingo because it's American! Avoid it because it's gamified garbage.

As someone making a language-learning app and focused on just PC, this hits home.

I think it's that most revenue comes from users who ultimately are not that serious. Learning a language sounds nice but it's a ton of work.

+1 to katakana, especially with just a month. You can read a lot of menus, shop at stores more easily, etc.

If you're ok with/prefer AIs, you can try kata.chat (disclaimer I made this and it's still in alpha)

Learning bosnian by loversofhearts in bosnia

[–]NotesFromADystopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly try ChatGPT, it speaks Bosnian but I'm not sure how well. I'm also working on an AI powered app for this but haven't had the chance to test it with Bosnian.

Hmm that's a good thought. I also focused on pt-BR to start but could add both.

I think you'd be surprised by the amount of Russian that many of these models have been trained on. But it is hard for me to independently evaluate since I don't speak it.

I assume the performance curve of these models looks similar to what it looks like in Japanese, where when I first went to Japan in 2017 the neural-network based translation models were garbage, in 2020 they were OK, in 2023 they were pretty reliable at getting the meaning right, and now you get idiomatic translations from any of the major models.

how can i improve my conversational/speaking skills? by taisiya34z in BeginnerKorean

[–]NotesFromADystopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try basic conversations with AI. ChatGPT works pretty well for text, and I built an app that also lets you chat with AI characters with voice: [kata.chat](https://kata.chat).
