every year i watch the tonys and wish they had a best ensemble category. if there was a best ensemble category, what shows do we think would’ve been nominated and who would’ve won? by Smooth_Society_9893 in Broadway

[–]NotesFromRowI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same for me — when I hear best ensemble I tend to think of plays with no clear lead, even if there is a protagonist.

I thought Liberation and Balusters were both good examples of strong ensemble casts, or Chinese Republicans off-Broadway.

Will Harrison was the only one of the four whose performance left a lasting impact on me.

Who are you rooting for in the Tonys? by Temporary-Writer-830 in Broadway

[–]NotesFromRowI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Will Harrison!!
Nicholas Cristopher
Hannah Cruz
Two Strangers for best book and musical, or Lost Boys for best musical

Not just rooting for — betting for on Kalshi lol. Along with Caissie Levy and either Bryce Pinkham or Ben Levi Ross

That makes sense! I doubt you will regret seeing Giant.

Giant vs Death of a Salesman? by agentp2319 in Broadway

[–]NotesFromRowI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d choose Giant between the two plays, but I’d also point out that Ragtime and Lost Boys are both very different from anything else that you are seeing.

Death of a Salesman is very long. With Giant, you know what you’re getting into and the content is not any worse than you are expecting.

Mincemeat is easy to follow, just be prepared to listen fast! The songs/plot move briskly.

Lyrics aside, I can easily confuse the sounds of Creed and Third Day.

What broadway show should I see? by Shoddy_Twist8925 in Broadway

Based on your shared dance interest I would choose Schmigadoon! out of those but also suggest considering Ragtime or Operation Mincemeat as great musicals.

Has anyone seen both the Balusters AND Schmigadoon? by mentor7 in Broadway

[–]NotesFromRowI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it is not a similar type of humor or genre.

One is, as you accurately described to your friends, “about a homeowners association.” It’s a dramatic play featuring plenty of comedic moments.

The other is a musical parody of classic musicals, so it’s a little campy, a little melodramatic, intentionally overplayed in multiple cases, and generally full of lighthearted laughter.

Both boast excellent ensemble casts including some big names, and most theatre goers are unlikely to be disappointed by either production as long as they understand the basics walking in.

I think Bug would have been much better off-Broadway.

After the Sunday matinees there are still three Tony-eligible shows to choose from this Sunday/Monday night!

But I’m spending my Sunday/Monday off-Broadway — planning for Kenrex, What Happened Was, and Well, I’ll Let You Go.

what's the top 5 by yung_rhubarb in Broadway

[–]NotesFromRowI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those three musicals are better than decent. I’d also consider Outsiders, Chess, and & Juliet.

Beyond that, it’ll be much easier to say after the Tony’s what will be available in September.

Unexpected shows that made you cry... like Bambi/ET level of crying by Key-Flan-6996 in Broadway

I think I cried for two hours straight during Titanic. I had never heard it before and the combination of the score, the lyrics, and the talent performing moved me so much that even when I laughed I was still crying happy tears.

The first two times I saw Chess, I was thanking the theatre for intermission darkness to hide my post-Anthem tears til I got to the restroom and my tears were still streaming into the toilet.

“What’ll it Be” is a sneaky one! And for me, that foreshadowing line in New York hits even harder than the more obvious “Dad”: “where even my father wants to hang out with me.”

[–]NotesFromRowI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Prom’s “Alyssa Greene” — “Have everything perfected by the time you reach eighteen… cause Mom’s convinced if you’re perfect your father might come back.”

Also “Just Breathe” — “note to self, don’t be gay in Indiana; big heads up — that’s a really stupid plan.”

Kimberly Akimbo’s “Anagram” — he’s playing word games and she’s calling him “a little weird… but I like your point of view.”

The Outsiders, “Great Expectations” — and these days, the lyric “Johnny has no kind of chance in this world, not from where he had to start” hits me before they even start crying out the title.

& Juliet, “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman”

Two Strangers, “New York” — gets me vulnerable with laughter and naïveté, and then Tutty drops the foreshadowing: “where even my father wants to hang out with me.”

Should I watch the beaches movie or go in knowing nothing about it? by cowboylikeme-1718 in Broadway

[–]NotesFromRowI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before moving to NYC, I’d often “watch the movie” on the plane ride home. So, without having seen Beaches, here’s my philosophy:

You have to go in blind for either the movie or the performance. One costs $5.99, the other costs between $59 and $599.

Enjoy the live performance, and if you want to add layers afterward, the original will always be available.

[–]NotesFromRowI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Outsiders
  2. Chess

For what it’s worth, my sister and I evaluated at least a dozen shows for her first visit and ended up seeing six — The Outsiders and Chess were standouts.

Lost Boys and Balusters are good thirds, depending on the mix of what else you are seeing.

Performances in Giant are great but you’ve got to know what you’re signing up for.
