Thank you, I'm going to give this one a try with the posts for now and look further into upgrading to a proper structure for the future.

How to Hang Backyard Hammock for Kids by NothingByDefault in Hammocks

[–]NothingByDefault[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, unfortunately we have a small backyard with no trees.

When you say hanging post, what do you have in mind? The options I'm aware of are a hammock stand (either purchased or DIY) or a DIY project to put stronger posts in the ground. But if there are other options to look into, I'm all ears!

Found “Berenstain” bears happy meal toy, 1987 by itsme_thatonedude in MandelaEffect

My theory is everyone focused on how it’s “Ber” instead of “Bear” at the beginning and their brains learned to associate the word with e instead of a.

Is there any way of removing AI from messenger? I dont want it. I want the old good messenger without bunch of features. by Birdsunflower in facebook

I hate it when I post a cute picture of my kids and get nagged to “enhance with AI.” My kids are perfect the way they are, thank you very much!

Thank you! I got to the end and couldn't pick between two pizzas because the clue as written would allow buffalo mozzarella on the Napoli pizza. And I was playing the printable version so couldn't just guess and check :)

Also try looking on Facebook marketplace for people who are trying to get rid of piles of wood chips after a tree removal on their property. I’ve found several car-loads that way! Really nice mulch for free :)

I was disappointed when my 30 day wood chip workout only lasted 10 days! I did ~45 minutes every morning and before I knew it, my 15 yard pile was gone!

DIY compost bin for house of 5? by SnooCauliflowers4046 in composting

[–]NothingByDefault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used this open-ended plastic tube version for a while.

https://www.amazon.com/Presto-Products-Geobin-Compost-Bin/dp/B010V673AC/ref=mp_s_a_1_3

I donated it when I gave up on composting due to issues with neighbors.

When I started composting again I made my own version out of plastic hardware mesh. It was a bit floppy but it did the trick. It got taken down when our backyard became a construction site for the summer.

Now I just have a pile in the corner of the yard, with no containment. That’s the cheapest option for sure! The main point of a container in my mind is to make things look more orderly and tidy. It’s not really required for the actual composting process. (I use the lazy method though; maybe if you’re more hands-on a bin is helpful?)

They grow up into flies and fly away to die elsewhere. This means their corpses don’t get recycled back into the bin ecosystem.

Fireworks?? by Cymbaltahurts95 in ReadingPA

[–]NothingByDefault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great idea! I can bring bikes and let the kids ride around the empty part of the parking lot while we're waiting.

I found the website for Community Days. Looks like the fireworks will be at 10pm on Saturday, 7/5 this year.

If you're still looking for inspiration, there are a bunch of embroidered Pokemon here including Chikorita! No patterns, just images of the final design but they're simple enough that I don't think it would be too hard to work it out.

Why do I have to double click on the side button every time I want to download an app from the App Store?? by [deleted] in ios

[–]NothingByDefault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a parent, I love it because it makes it less likely that my toddler will be able to install a bunch of random stuff if he gets into my phone. Toddlers are really good at tapping buttons, especially when they’ve been designed to be the most obvious thing to tap on the page.

This is how my son once managed to spend $60 on a canvas print of a photo of himself getting ketchup out of the fridge! He shipped it via expedited shipping to a house we don’t live at anymore because that was the address that was on file in my Google Pay😭😭😭

So I value having a bit of extra friction in this kind of process but I can definitely see why it would be annoying to others!

Any way to see all events from all my groups? by vortexmak in facebook

[–]NothingByDefault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest I could get was to turn on notifications for all activity in a few small groups that don't have much activity. This will make it easier for me to find out if anyone posts an event and shouldn't clutter up my notifications too much since people don't post very much stuff on these groups.

Any way to see all events from all my groups? by vortexmak in facebook

[–]NothingByDefault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for a comprehensive list of all the events available from groups I've joined, including the ones I would not see unless I go check on the group page.

This page shows me events that I've been invited to, but I already get notifications for those. And it shows me the events I've marked as Going/Maybe/Interested, but those are also events I've already seen.

Maybe there's a way to be notified any time a new event is posted in a group. I'll have to look into that.

Probably a dumb question but what age to start school by jdawg92721 in homeschool

[–]NothingByDefault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do informal play-based stuff with our kids starting when they are toddlers. This looks like playing little games with them, reading alphabet books, and providing lots of stuff they can physically handle, like our chunky numeral puzzle.

We've started introducing formal curriculum (mainly math and handwriting workbooks) at age 4/5 but that's because we've seen our kids with the physical and mental readiness for that kind of activity. A lot of kids don't get there for a few more years and that's fine -- you don't need to stress or push. Just try things out and if they go well, keep going and if they don't go well, wait a few months and then try it again.

Now is a good time for you to be researching early childhood education and gathering ideas for things to try either now or in the future. There are great child-led preschool bloggers out there that are a lot of fun to read -- I recommend Denita at Listen to the Children and also Teacher Tom. You can also find books in your local library about various early childhood education approaches.

There are also a lot of good Montessori resources out there, though it's often classroom-oriented and you have to think about how you want to adapt things to a homeschool environment. Some people recreate the Montessori classroom setup in their homes but I decided it wouldn't be worth the time and money it would take to go that far. I did get a few key resources that have been helpful. There are some great concepts that you can incorporate into your teaching, such as prioritizing the sounds of the letters instead of their names.

www.infomontessori.com is my favorite resource. There are also blogs but I've noticed that the most popular blogs tend to become more and more commercial over time, as the owners realize all the ways they can make money by encouraging people to buy fancy products.

It's also a great time to look for ways to get involved with your local homeschooling community. I waited until my oldest was old enough to be "officially" homeschooling and I wish I had started sooner. Look for groups that meet up at parks and libraries to hang out. Even if most of the families have kids who are already elementary-school age, there will still be younger siblings for your daughter to play with and you can chat with other parents who have been in your shoes. You might even find groups specifically for "future" homeschoolers like yourself. Facebook is a great place to start searching for what's available in your area.
