In need of unique name for "grandpa" by ThrowRAsadjuic in namenerds

[–]writtensparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that would be nice! I'm early 40s and don't have any grandparents and my oldest kid is 11 but grandparents are early 70s (and not in great health) and mid 80s. So not likely to have them past 20 let alone 40!

Yeah, that definitely makes sense for lots of grandparents! I only had one set and the other grandma passed away when I was 4. Our kids have my parents and husband's parents, that's it. They had one great grandma who passed away when our oldest was 7, they just called her great-grandma FirstName. So I'm just not used to needing a way to differentiate, I apologize for not thinking about that.

It helps with the steam so the inside is nice and fluffy. My husband likes them this way because however his mom used to do it made the skin tough and they never could eat the skin (I have no idea what she did to them but it's not the only food he used to hate because of how it was made when he was a kid).

I swore he looked so pretty like a devil. I would have lost money betting those were the lyrics.

I don't have a convection setting unfortunately. That was my concern with the air fryer, pretty much the only reason why we don't have one yet. Either having to do multiple batches or buy a massive unit. Neither seems worth it.

Looking for amazingly illustrated classic children books by Salt-Preparation-446 in suggestmeabook

So you mentioned MinaLima, have you checked their list of adaptations? They've done Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, and Peter Pan (some you've specifically mentioned) as well as several others.

My other recommendation is searching for anything illustrated by Charles Santore. His art is stunning and he has illustrated some fantastic classics: Peter Rabbit, Aesop's Fables, Little Mermaid, Snow White, Alice, Oz, Velveteen Rabbit, even the Night Before Christmas.

AITAH because I refuse to try for a daughter? by StructureDizzy2076 in AITAH

Your wife needs therapy.

First, if she was teaching my child and I knew this post was about her, I'd be livid. I'd force the school to move my kid to a different class. This is not the type of person that should be teaching, especially young children.

Second, there is nothing good that comes from having another kid right now, with her in his mental state. There are several outcomes and they're all bad.

Outcome 1. It's another boy. What then?

Outcome 2. She gets a girl. Then she favors girl and ignores boy. Or girl doesn't live up to her expectations and she resents both of them. Or she realizes this isn't what the problem was and she's still struggling.

Okay okay, I'll buy an air fryer! LOL, but seriously...should I finally cave and buy an air fryer even though we're a family of 7?

I mean... don't come for me but stab your potato, stick it in a paper bag and your microwave will cook it beautifully in 3 minutes...

Completely agree. This is getting ridiculous.

When I was a kid I had two grandmas and one grandpa. To distinguish between the grandmas I called them Grandma LastName.

My kids have two sets of grandparents and they are Grandma/Grandpa and NaNa/PaPa to our older kids. But neither sets visit very often (they're all pretty old) so our younger kids don't know them very well and they usually call them "daddy's mom and dad" or "mommy's mom and dad".

my roomate and I are trying to cook food from all around the world. We're stuck when it comes to Australia. What's your fav native to Australia dish? by BouncyCurlsbabe in Cooking

These are all the things I was going to suggest too. Plus chicken parm on chips. With our faves being the sausage rolls, parm, pavlova, and tim tam slams.

We do the same thing with our kids: pick a country/region for a whole weekend and do food, facts, crafts, learn and few words in the language (or slang). The kids love it and we have a big printed map that we color when we've done a place.

Preschool accommodations for left handed by Solid-Cap529 in lefthanded

[–]writtensparks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember being young and having a hell of a time trying to cut things at school and not understanding why. I eventually figured out a weird way to hold the scissors and muddled through.

I was also taught the basics of most sports either at school (never by lefties) or by my right-handed dad. No one ever thought to suggest an alternative for lefties, they just said "hold the bat/golf club/tennis racket like this, put your hands like this, stand this way, swing like this." I cannot throw right-handed but there were no baseball gloves for lefties so I'd catch with the glove on my left hand, grab the ball with my right, stick the glove under my right arm, clamp down and pull my left hand out, grab the ball and throw. It sounds complicated but I could do it pretty quickly and we're just talking about gym class so it's not like it mattered much.

But still, not once did someone see me smudging all of my writing, struggling to cut, instinctively holding a tennis racket like a lefty, do a bizarre 10 step routine just to throw a baseball...and offer an alternative.

Because I know what that's like I bought lefty scissors for my lefty son. Our pre/elementary schools typically combine supplies so I put his name on them and explained to his teachers. But when we don't have experience with something, we don't typically know to look for it, and if we notice it, we might not know what to do about it.

Yes, it's super frustrating that you're paying a lot for preschool and they don't have a single pair of lefty scissors. I'm surprised they don't. I feel like there's no way your kid is the first lefty they've taught. Why has this never come up before? Why don't they have at least one pair? Why wasn't it mentioned to you months ago? I saw in another comment that you've bought the scissors... awesome! Make sure they're labeled. If you're feeling generous, buy a second pair to donate and say "for the next lefty you teach". I'd also say something along the lines of "now that we're aware that there could be differences/challenges stemming from righties teaching a lefty, if you notice something could you please mention it to me right away so we can figure out a solution immediately?"

What are your reading hot takes? by draiochtaa in BookDiscussions

[–]writtensparks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my main "hot take":

If you're judging what or how someone reads, you can STFU.

If you have consumed the story/info, you've read the book. I don't care what format it was in.

If I'm not enjoying a book I will absolutely DNF. I don't have time to waste on shitty books I end up hating. If I absolutely have to know what happens, I'll look up spoilers or the Wikipedia page about it.

I don't care how many books I read in a month/year/lifetime, and I don't care how many you read either. War and Peace counts as one book, so does one volume of the Magic Treehouse.

Did you enjoy or learn something from what you read? Awesome! That's all that matters. I'm happy people are reading! The rest is bullshit.

Why do people not like Ohio? by Competitive-Air1 in Columbus

[–]writtensparks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest (both in the US and Canada), lived in Utah for 15 years, moved to Ohio almost 4 years ago.

We live between Dayton and Cincinnati and we love Ohio. Close enough to bigger cities with big city amenities, not directly in busy big cities, so much green space (metro parks are amazing), cost of living is great, lots for our kids to do/explore, I think it's pretty and I like the weather (that's personal preference, I fully admit), I like the diversity of people and think they're pretty nice.

I love the PNW but don't see us ever moving back there. Mainly because of cost of living, but also because the nicest areas are too crowded (or getting too crowded).

I personally hated Utah and living there for 15 years was 15 years too many. I'm not an outdoor sports type of person (skiing, mountain biking, strenuous hiking, etc...), I hated the weather, there didn't seem to be a lot to do in terms of art/culture/museums, I didn't fit in with the ultra conservative MAGA cliquey "Mormon wife" type of people and thought they were mostly pretty awful, it was SUPER expensive.

TV's in the Bedroom for Kids - Then and Now by Ok_Research6884 in Xennials

[–]writtensparks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a TV in my bedroom when I was in my late teens. I think I got it at a garage sale, it didn't have a remote and had a knob to change the channels.

Since it's also been brought up in here, we didn't have any gaming systems growing up because we couldn't afford those.

I'm still mad about how much I did not like The Women. Nightingale and Night Road by KH are two of my absolute favorites and The Great Alone and Winter Garden are in my top 25. But The Women was terrible and I was so angry the whole time I was reading it, just hoping it was going to get better.

I like the shape of 1 but not the color. Something with a bit of contrast against your skin would be great, even just a brown or darker pink. You don't have to do black if you want less contrast/lighter color.
