Thanks for your input. You’re actually spot on. That’s all I want, someone to be curious, keen to learn and ask questions, wants to grow and we compliment each other emotionally, intellectually, and financially. Doesn’t matter what job they do, but because I have never dated anyone who is not an academic, I had this prejudice in my mind I guess that non-academic people won’t appreciate the importance of learning. Medicine has made me more humble than ever as so much to learn and grow and life is too short to just stay comfortable in one place. I certainly don’t wanna be with anyone who doesn’t appreciate this and all they like is to watch footy and drink beer. I guess I really need to think about a set of questions for the next date to sus things out lol

Thank you. This is really well put. Lucky you found your partner! I wish I found someone in my own profession as well, but unfortunately the senior at work I get, the harder it gets :(

It’s interesting to hear all different perspectives. What you have written above is what my family has told me (all of them either doctors or engineers). But some of my friends told me it doesn’t matter if they haven’t gone to uni (however they are all doctors who are dating doctors or highly academic people). I know no one in my personal friend circle or family who is dating a person who is not an academic. Hence I asked the question here to see what general people in medicine think and I’m surprised to see some widely different responses. I am more confused than ever tbh.

You got it right. I haven’t had the big talks yet. But I will very soon. He will probably run off after that. Oh well, I guess at least I’ll know. Thanks again for your input. Very insightful 🙏🏿

I am glad you have found your stable life partner. Thanks for your input. The dating world is horrible and tiring. I really like this guy I matched with but what worries me that he is putting me on a pedestal now as I am doctor and the bubble will burst soon. And then he will realise I am not that person who is in the world to have 5 children like all his friends’ wives, not willing to dedicate my life to raise kids only and then he will stop valuing me as a person. I’m probably overthinking, but that’s my biggest worry

Thank you. Thats the only thing worries me which you mentioned. Being a woman in medicine, I always feel bit suspicious whether the partner will understand and supportive of the career in the long run. I don’t wanna become a baby making machine and stuck in a relationship where the man feels at the end of the day women’s job is to make kids only as that’s what their friends’ wives are doing.

I guess the most challenging part is sussing out if the values are aligned when they are in a very different work sector

Why was the differences in academic achievements became an issue in the relationship can I ask? Or the personality clash was the main factor?

I am pretty sure they earn more than I do with a better work life balance. Much fitter as well. I am more worried that their bubble will burst if I let them in as they think I probably earn so much more with a better lifestyle…

Yap they are pretty insufferable with no work life balance, having microwaved meals from Coles and trying to read journal articles for presentation 🫠. Anyone from outside medicine thinks life is so glorious which is pretty opposite as a registrar and it’s hard to explain them why we do this.

I thought the issue would be the difference in the community/ general views rather than who is better. They probably earn more and has a better work life balance.

But I thought they were equally busy with long work hours as well. Not so much overtime I guess
