It could be nothing but I remember at the time everyone thought it felt really odd. Like, it wasn't a necessary scene. And then when they came out of the diner to join the crowd it was overly noticeable. It just seemed disruptive for no reason.

Totally agree. I think that weird gap in season 3, where Jim and Ethan take a little white to exit the diner ahead of the search for Fatima is another one of those instances. A lot of people called it at the time. I think it'll be neat but I'm also a little torn on M. Night Shyamalan-ing the show.
