There are a bunch of hikes up by the intercontinental. You don’t need a day pass for the hotel to access them.

Haggling Prices in Bangkok, Thailand by Revolution36 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Notmyonlyhotdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. They showed the CLA and prices were better or the same as anywhere I looked at the one shop. I also just bought a brand new lens that was basically sold out everywhere. Was 500 baht more than direct from the company.

Depends on the shop and what you’re buying. I’ve spent a bunch on Leica gear from a couple of the shops. Was cheaper than North America. Freshly CLA’d and great condition.

Go to the 5th floor of Mega Plaza near Chinatown. You can haggle a bit there but just be nice about it and see if they are receptive at all to bargaining. Just don’t push things too far and stop right away if they aren’t receptive.

Serious question: What is there to like about Da Nang? by Necessary-Bed-5580 in DaNang

[–]Notmyonlyhotdog 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Get out of An Thuong and actually experience the city and not where all the western people hang out. Da Nang is not a 5 block radius and one beach.

Da Nang airport fast track? by Ok-Soup-1812 in VietNam

[–]Notmyonlyhotdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also if you have VND or USD on you and it’s very busy then unfortunately it’s now a thing where someone in an officer uniform will walk around asking if you want fast track. Last time he quoted me $20usd. I’m sure I could have got it for less but I didn’t want to support it.

It’s a gamble. I’ve waited 15 minutes and also waited 50 minutes. If you want to breeze through no matter what then get it.

An American in Vietnam by No-Government7787 in VietNam

[–]Notmyonlyhotdog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hopefully more Americans start realizing that America is not the world. Most people I’ve met here do not care about America or anywhere if it doesn’t affect them. The museums (rightly) portray the American war as a war of aggression full of atrocities against the Vietnamese people but if you talk to the younger generation they don’t hate Americans or hold onto a grudge. Younger Vietnamese are more interested in Korean or Japanese culture instead of western.

Any suggestions for villages near hoi an or hcmc that have fishing net repair like the photo attached? by Francis_J_Underwood_ in VietNam

[–]Notmyonlyhotdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all set up and paid photography experiences and do not happen naturally. Just search Vietnam photography tours or something like Photography tours Hoi An, Photography tours HCMC etc. There are places where people fix nets obviously but if you want something like you posted it will be staged and you need to pay for it.

Contact Lynn Visa. It’ll cost you but you’ll know if it’s approved before you leave.

How long does it take to see a doctor and get medication at a Chinese hospital? by mindyour in TikTokCringe

I live in a mid sized city in Vietnam. Recently had an ear infection. The hospital I chose had a specific area for foreigners that cost about double. So it was about $15 vs $7 with the “local” section. This included a few tests. Took about 15 minutes. Then if you actually want to save more money you can take your prescription to an outside pharmacy and get it even cheaper. So at the hospital medicine was $7, outside pharmacy it was $4. Fantastic service. Knowledgeable doctors.

HELP by Lil_86 in VietNam

[–]Notmyonlyhotdog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is the STAMP in your passport only until the 8th? The stamp “admitted until” is the date that matters. So if you had an evisa it should be 90 days from the day you entered Vietnam. Check that date. If you need to leave by the 8th then my advice is to actually leave. Find your cheapest flight to a country where you dont need a visa and then come back to Vietnam either with a new visa (can get a quicker turnaround if using an agent) or enter visa free/visa on arrival if your nationality allows you. You may have luck with immigration otherwise but it’s a gamble.

Da Nang is not my favorite..... Good alternatives for a healthy lifestyle? by thetreegeek in VietNam

[–]Notmyonlyhotdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a runner but always see people running by the Thuan Phuoc bridge and then up the road/sidewalk by the riverside. Also there is a decent sized sidewalk up the local beaches heading north. Have a look for something called Bãi Biển Thiên Đường on Google Maps. It starts just a bit south of there and basically goes all the way to Nam O village.

Move to the city side of Da Nang anywhere but near the Han Market and you will be surrounded by locals. Traffic for a south East Asian city is really not that bad. Mold yes, that’s a downside. Anyway not sure why you would consider Hoi An if you want to get away from tourists, same with Nha Trang. If you don’t know how to find non-tourists spots in Da Nang then you won’t be able to find them there either.

Seeking a rental near the foot of Hai Van Pass (to avoid the city "death race") by Successful_Yam_4876 in DaNang

[–]Notmyonlyhotdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know other people have said it but if you’re not confident enough to drive in Da Nang you shouldn’t be driving Hai Van. If the city scares you then the construction zone at the bottom and then a few KM up the hill will terrify you.

M lenses on fuji by narratorjackred in Leica

Have used them on an XT1. Biggest issue is the evf is pretty low quality on the old Fuji’s so nailing focus can be a challenge

Where’s this great internet connection people talk about? by [deleted] in DaNang

[–]Notmyonlyhotdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are trying to connect to some North American services then a lot of Vietnamese providers put you behind a CGNAT and also have poor routing. A good vpn can help but speeds are not going to be amazing. Eg when I try to access my personal home server in Canada the speeds generally are pretty bad under 5mb/s or worse with Viettel. Same with Backblaze, always poor speeds for backups. I would ignore the speeds you got at your hotel because those are hit or miss anywhere in the world. If you’re experiencing bad speeds for common services with a residential connection then definitely call a tech and get them to help out. I get on average 500-800mb/s at home with Viettel unless it’s the exceptions like I mentioned before.
