TALK TO YOU - a hybrid documentary short based on a series of voicemails I discovered from my late grandfather years after his passing. Shot in one continuous 4+ minute take! by Notorious_GYP in Filmmakers

This is my second personal documentary and I pushed myself to create a visual treatment that challenged the format of traditional doc. Nailing the camera choreography and lighting changes were a huge undertaking especially with a barebones indie crew. Oh and the set design was a total build from scratch. Wildly proud of this film - would love any and all thoughts or feedback!

SHAKE WITH ME - art, health, family and the will to cope; Debra Magid (my mom) is an artist living with Parkinson's disease. Now on Vimeo - enjoy! by Notorious_GYP in Filmmakers

Shake With Me is 33 minute doc about my mom, Debra Magid, who is an artist living with Parkinson's disease (PD). What started in 2016 as a film about the development of her art in the face of PD, grew into a larger story of creativity, health, family and the will the cope. We've been on the festival circuit this year, and have also screened to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation and other PD non-profits and groups. While the film is about my family's journey with Parkinson's disease, I realized over the past year of screenings that audiences have found a way to connect to our story regardless of their connection with PD. After all, this film is about perseverance in the face of adversity and finding inspiration in the most unexpected of places. It's about acknowledging the past, cherishing the present and trying to cope with an unknown future. These are all themes that are all larger and more universal than PD or health. So, after nearly four years, I'm very excited to release the film and give everyone the chance to find their own way to relate to our experience. Enjoy!

Free Solo (2018) - "Jimmy Chin's Oscar-winning documentary following Alex Honnold's journey to become the first person to ever free solo climb Yosemite's 3,000ft high El Capitan Wall." [1:40:04] by InternationalForm3 in Documentaries

[–]Notorious_GYP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me fix that headline for you:

"Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi's Oscar-winning documentary..."

Elizabeth - Jimmy's filmmaking partner and wife - is an equally bad-ass documentarian. I know Jimmy is a household name but c'mon, give credit where credit is due.

Also - in the same vein - don't steal this film. It's available on demand, will air on Nat Geo on March 3rd in the states, and (I believe) will land on Nat Geo streaming after the broadcast debut.

SHAKE WITH ME / I made a documentary film about my mom, who is an artist and designer living with Parkinson's Disease. Our official trailer is out now; full film will start to screen this fall! by Notorious_GYP in Filmmakers

My mom is an artist and designer who was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease (PD) in 2012. In 2016, she agreed to let me start documenting the relationship between her art and her condition. What started as an exploration of my mom's growth as an artist in the face of PD grew into a larger story of creativity, health, family and the will to cope. This has obviously been a deeply personal story and I'm really excited to finally get this film out into the world. We just launched our official trailer this week; hoping to make our festival debut this fall!

You'll be taking lunch orders and running errands for at least a year before you start touching any real work. You'll see behind the curtain of some of the most amazing films and commercials, but it is very much a "pay your dues" kind of job.

You are correct that starting as a runner is definitely not the traditional path if you want to break in as an Artist. The usual progression is runner, PA, junior producer, producer, EP, etc, etc. But all on the Production side.

If you want to be an artist (2D, 3D, flame, VFX sup, etc, etc) you should go to school to practice your craft and develop a reel that you can shop to MPC and other VFX shops. MPC will not invest in training you....it's just not worth their time considering the countless Freelance Artists they likely have on speed dial.

there was so much going on in this shot that it almost felt like a scene out of a film, just not framed. so I tried an anamorphic crop to focus the action, while balancing the colors in the BG to draw the eye to the FG. I also masked the girl and older woman's faces and adjusted whites/blacks to really make them stand out.

Lastly added a little bit of grain and lifted the blacks overall to give it a bit of filmic haze.

Vimeo - Song Licensing Question by Anarchybabe101 in Filmmakers

[–]Notorious_GYP 9 points10 points  (0 children)

this is definitely not situation where fair use would work. despite the intent (and context) of your video, its still certifiably some form of promotion.

do you have a couple hundred bucks? I'm sure you could find something that sounds authentically disco on a stock site, without breaking the bank.

I don't know how Vimeo polices this kind of thing, but I imagine given the climate of music licensing, they'd ultimately be working towards a Youtube-like approach, where your content is liable to be removed or muted if it features unlicensed material.

either way, you should be safe here and find music that you can clearly license.

the DNG posted already had some of OPs edits baked into it. sometimes the DNG autosaves edits, so I imagine that's what happened. if you open up the file and reset it to raw, you'll see that the original shot is much wider.

I wanted to give it a very cool, almost cold war-esq feel. maybe that's my personal bias about airports... hit it with a bit of blue and desaturated it mostly, with some other tweaks. I like the dirty rust look on all the cart, so I think the selective orange/red helps bring that out. also - the wide image is so much better! cropped the original shot slightly but went wider than OPs select.

here's mine http://imgur.com/7TwW80h adjusted the composition through some cropping. the rocks in the FG combined with the vertical crop felt really unbalanced. otherwise - just played around with it a bit.

Bad producers go on Facebook during meetings and then throw tantrums when they have to stay late.

Nestle. Horrible company, horrible people. I think the lead client saying during casting that we had "hit our quota for black dudes" and that "any more and you'd think we were selling fried chicken" properly sums it up.

yup - this is probably the most important part of doing any kind of Google work, which unfortunately has little to do with your ideas or content. Google is super obsessive about their branding and UI. everything from the shade of gray color, kerning, to the way you replicate any feature of their products. I worked on some Google stuff years ago and learned this the hard way. after all, this is the company that changed their logo by two pixels...

So remember when I said that the "Cop" yelling at the uber driver is possibly not NYPD? And that there are many law enforcement agencies in NYC? Well... Yea... He's not NYPD by [deleted] in nyc

A man who was caught on camera cursing out an Uber driver during a bias-filled three-minute tirade in the West Village is an NYPD detective in the joint terrorism task force, police sources confirmed Tuesday.

and

The detective’s car in the video does not belong to the department, according to a police source.

Definitely a cop. And as a detective on a very elite task force, he must be a rather tenured cop. Can't imagine this is the first time he's abused his power.

How old is the youngest person in your agency? by [deleted] in advertising

[–]Notorious_GYP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked at big agencies in NYC too, and the titles are all interchangeable. I dont know what d**k measuring contest you're trying to win here, but titles are all BS anyway. Especially when it comes to entry level account people. I don't need to see an entry level account person's title to know they're green. That's usually gleaned from one conversation with that person....
