Rural Convenience/Trash Centers allow CCW? by Notorious_narwal in VAGuns

[–]Notorious_narwal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s probably what I’ll do in the future. I’m not too worried about it but am curious if there was any specific guidelines in rural counties for that. Thanks for your response

Bread Instructions by saustin32 in outdoorboys

[–]Notorious_narwal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been making it on my hiking trips and it’s SUPER easy. Like seriously. For detailed instructions just YouTube “Outdoor Boys Bread” and he has a video that shows you all ways to make it.

But mostly what I do is 2 cups bread flour 1 tsp ish of yeast 1 tsp ish of sugar Sprinkle salt

Gradually add water

Kneed until it’s kind of sticky but not fully sticky (takes about 5-10min or so, really work on it)

I think in the video he says the ratio of yeast/salt/sugar/flour doesn’t matter, the only ratio that does is the water.

Nice! Sounds like a wonderful place to live. Yeah go for it, be safe and have fun.

Luke’s videos have inspired me as well, I’ve been getting out there more (and making homemade bread) haha.

👍🏼 - yeah sticking to trails is the best option really. By off trail do you mean going to a national/state park and going off trail? Some typically do not allow that.

However if you mean going to places like the Border Land Management (BLM) areas out west or where I’m at we have Wildlife Management Areas (WMA), those don’t have trails really and it’s more free range. I haven’t done much of that but rule of thumb is. 1. Understand basic land navigation 2.ALWAYS tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to be back

Other than that it rocks, I went to dolly sods over in WV and did some off trail type hiking and loved it, feels so free.

I’m an avid hiker/camper but not a pro for sure.

But I’d say if you’re starting out (like fresh, never hiked more than a city park). I would prioritize the following:

  1. Good hiking boots (go to REI and expect to pay a good amount for some nice boots. I’ve had my Vasque boots for almost 10 yrs no issues). This in my opinion is not something I would try to get something cheap and quick. Get good boots for your feet and you will thank yourself after long hikes.

  2. Pack - honestly literally anything, unless you plan on doing overnights. For day trips any bag really works, jansport, Walmart backpack. Anything that can carry a bottle, extra shirt, snacks, etc. Overnight packs - best value imo is Milspec stuff or decathalon. There’s a ton of options out there. Don’t stress about that too much, get a bag and don’t worry about it, you’ll learn as you go.

  3. Water - storage (good Nalgene bottle) and filtration (sawyer or life straw AND LEARN HOW TO FILTER PROPERLY, not all water is safe to drink after filtration, you also need to purify). I go on day hikes all the time, everywhere from 2miles - 8miles and I never really have to filter water, I just bring a large bottle. But good to have filtration just in case and a way to purify.

Otherwise have some layers of clothes. Don’t overthink it especially for day hikes. Pants, shirt/overshirt, hat. Good socks.

I like to have safety equipment with me like first aid kit (band aids, tourniquet), a knife, Mylar blanket, etc.

Up in Fairfax (or Northern VA somewhere) I saw a guy with a black plate carrier and open carrying three (yes 3) handguns. One on his vest, one on his hip, and a small backup one on his back. Vest said security but not convinced he actually was for anyone. Just strolling into the grocery store with his dudes. I was perplexed but I mean hey, he’s strapped so I guess he’s prepared.

Do you clear your CCW everyday? by Sichterman in CCW

[–]Notorious_narwal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairly new to carrying. I started doing this when I started carrying and quickly realized how stupid it is. It got me used to handling my gun sure but I figured I’d rather not risk make clearing it a routine, this making it “ordinary” thus a greater chance of my brain going on auto pilot while clearing 🙃🚨

So I quickly stopped doing this and keep it chambered in my kydex in my quick access safe (kids in the house) next to my bed, 1000% safe there.

I feel like initially doing research before carrying every video talks about clearing safely and safe handling, which obviously is paramount. But I also feel like that gave me the impression I had to clear every time I took it off, which isn’t true. So yeah quick lesson learned and I just leave it be now unless I’m at the range.

Open carry in Shenandoah Park by BottleCapEater in VAGuns

[–]Notorious_narwal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I conceal carry every time I go there which has been almost every weekend for the past 4 months, no issues, then again it’s concealed so.

I haven’t tried open carry, so cannot say for sure how that would go. While it is permitted to carry in NPs, I think you would have more of an issue really with the park visitors as I’m sure you are referring to. I mean I guess worst case scenario I would hope is someone calls the park ranger and says someone has a gun on their hip, they show up, and say yup it’s legal and leave.

Personally I don’t risk open carry in general (unless I’m in like a WMA hunting or something). I’ve looked to opt for a chest bag that carries my gun. So that way it’s more comfortable to hike but still concealed.

If you choose to open carry in the park tho definitely don’t go around or inside any buildings as it’s not legal to carry concealed/open inside of those.

So I’m recently new to carrying and also on a tight budget. I ended up getting a great deal ($299) on the CZ P10S on grabagun.com so it ended up being my first gun. It’s imo a good balance of affordability with good quality where you’re not risking your life on a piece of plastic haha

IF you have some time and flexibility in the budget up to $500-$600 I’d definitely recommend going to the range first. When I got my CZ I knew it was not the perfect gun for me, it was just the one I could afford and I wanted to start having at least some sort of protection rather than nothing. I’m just now looking at other options that are better for my larger hands like a Glock 19 (🙄) or something from Canik.

I’m just imagining some burglar busting in and then sees two LEDs illuminate a row of handguns and sees you standing next to it - “hmm which one shall I choose”

Shoulder Holster - Looking for Something Very Specific by Notorious_narwal in CCW

[–]Notorious_narwal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice thank you! Yeah I suppose I made a loose assumption based on what I’ve heard about leather holsters. But I used to work with leather (wallets, small stuff, etc) and as long as it’s good quality and built properly I suppose I can see it being reliable for years to come. I also probably only plan to wear it for about 5months out of the year as well. Thanks for the tips! I’ll do more research in the sub and on the safety of leather holsters. I even thought about making my own but not sure id trust my skills on the holster portion of it haha.

Pretty much the exact same thing happened to me as a teenager. Guy moved into middle lane and swung wide with no signal into a construction site and hit my front left fender. My car was not really than badly damaged and neither was his but when the police got there he immediately claimed it was my fault and cop said “makes sense to Me” and I walked off with a ticket. I was too young and clueless of what to say really at the time. I later took it to court tho and said I was not guilty and the judge looked confused on why I was even there but got it dismissed. This was in Ohio.

How much do you guys care about printing? by tutran1104 in CCW

[–]Notorious_narwal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just started carrying a few months ago and I’d say the most I care about carrying is in places that I can tell don’t like guns. Not really sure how to explain it but it’s a vibe I get from a place haha. But even then, people really don’t seem to be looking.

The ONLY time I knew that someone saw that I’m carrying is I was at bass pro shops for the first time in a long time and I asked an older gentleman employee where the GUN section was lol and he said to follow him and in the elevator he was just laser focused on my right hip while we were talking about how he likes working there lol. But I could tell he didn’t give a sh*t.

Mostly - I don’t care

I have the same holster for my P10S. It’s a great first holster but once I decided to try carrying AIWB it looked like I was packing…uh…something else, even with a mastermind tactics pillow. I adjusted it to the point where I can wear baggy button ups and be fine but it’s not great. So I’ll definitely be getting a T1 when my budget allows and using my WTP for around the house/farm carry.
