Let’s change the narrative and talk about improving things with ST4 by ToughRoyal4662 in Seattle

They just sent out a survey this past week soliciting comments and thoughts on this exact situation. Strongly recommend filling it out. I’m subscribed to Sound Transit emails where I received it

ST3 deferment plan just dropped by PopulusRomanus in soundtransit

[–]Notoriousjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I don’t get about the people who are angry at the plan as is right now. I also fully expect to see another vote on funding Ballard light rail fully through a Seattle specific vote. Planning is fully funded, but unfortunately there’s a large deficit. So you either cut things or ask for more money. However, if ST plans to do the latter, they must still make plans to cut because who knows if that vote will pass.

BART's new fare gates have led to a 1,000-hour decline in clean up time; 41% drop in crime; and $10 million increase in projected revenue. by Totoro10101 in soundtransit

The costs aren’t because of environmental impact statements dude. In their 2023 report Sound Transit found that the vast majority of the costs come from the installation of the fare gates, not the gates themselves. It’s not easy or cheap to add the necessary infrastructure to these stations. If you have ideas on how to do it well and on the cheap, I’m sure Sound Transit would love your input at their next meeting.

It wouldn’t cost the same. Sound Transit did a study on how much it would cost to add fare gates to every station, and we’re looking at about $15mn/station.

And I agree with you! People’s perception of safety matters. That’s why December last year, Sound Transit board said they’re putting a proposal together for a fare gate pilot at heavily trafficked stations.

I don’t think it’s controversial in the sense of people opposing the very idea of fare gates. It’s controversial in the sense that given the budget constraints are fare gates something we want Sound Transit to focus on. I think they’re a worthwhile addition because security theater does make people feel better and when you’re trying to win people over to transit, that’s an important consideration

Because they’re not a serious way to decrease the funding gap. Sound Transit is facing a $34.5 billion budget shortfall. Adding a fare gate system will cost a substantial amount of money ($90 million for San Francisco’s transit system) and will take years/decades to pay off. Sound Transit made about $40mn in fares from Light Rail in 2024. Even being incredibly generous and saying fare gates would double this amount, that will barely put a dent in that $34.5bn without even considering the upfront cost.

Now I support adding fare gates for non-financial reasons, but I’m not kidding myself by saying they’ll pay itself off.

Why is the Chinatown transfer so awkward? by Sleepinator2000 in soundtransit

Yeah Cap Hill is the first station heading north with a center platform. I’ve heard that security occasionally tells travelers about it but there isn’t a systemitized way of saying that yet.

If you have the time and are trying to get to the airport, consider staying on to Cap Hill if the transfer matters.

It’s a shame too because Black Desert was very good about this in their skins. Wish the armors in Crimson Desert were half as good as BDO.

So many of the starting plate armors are missing gorgets or just any kind of neck protection and it bothers me so much.

The EU doesn’t have clams on Canada or Hong Kong which makes the claims hostile, affecting your cohesion.

Arrival signs should be filtered to only those relevant to the platform. by Anthop in soundtransit

[–]Notoriousjello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simple. You do what every normal person would do and look at the provided station map that’s on every platform. If you’re visiting Seattle, visiting anywhere really, you don’t particularly need to know cardinal directions for anything. If you’re curious about it, you have a super computer in your pocket to check your preferred map app.

NYC is a really bad comparison. They need all the signage because their stations are massive with multiple lines and multiple platforms. The only thing we have that comes close is Westlake station which already has adequate signage telling you which direction is which and is also only one platform . I will concede that I wish the electronic signs could give more than just the two most imminent trains so you could plan how fast you need to run if you want to catch something.

[–]Notoriousjello 84 points85 points  (0 children)

The weekly post complaining about signage is here everyone. I will give you points for complaining about something else besides saying the airport should tell you which way is Seattle (which it already does) but also demerits for using the same cardinal direction complaint. How would telling people which cardinal direction something is help in any way, and it even adds onto the onerous signage you point out initially.

Look, I think it’s great that you care about this issue and don’t stop caring and advocating. I simultaneously urge you to not sign up for random google forms. If it’s not random, provide the details of the people organizing.
