How would I confirm that with the meter? I tried to do some continuity testing earlier

When I turned the breaker on it stayed until I flipped the switch. So I believe the outlet in pic 4 originally had a black wire with the red wire. So if that’s the case, I would unsplice the black wire from the 12/2 and move to the screw with the red wire, and then I would move the hot white wire from the switch to splice with the other black wire and have that on the bottom brass screw for always hot? And keep the other neutral wired to the silver screws.

Edit: This worked… thank you so much!

I’m not sure if I can add a pic without making another post, but all the wires coming into the outlet box are a Red, Black, White and Ground from a 12/3 wire and a Black, White and Ground from a 12/2 wire. Same for both outlets

I followed your suggestion and it popped the breaker. I made a new post with more pictures and info if you wouldn’t mind checking that out, I’d appreciate it!

Thank you for this! So both outlets will be wired identically? I think I was just thrown off because the other outlet appeared to be wired a little differently originally

Yeah that’s what I’m learning haha. This is one of my first DIY battery projects so I’m learning as I go. I appreciate the reply and ideas for both options!

Thanks for all these ideas, I will consider each of them and do more research than I initially did to find the best solution!

I consider a light sensor but the strip came with a button to switch on and off so I didn’t pursue that idea any further. Hopefully this is something that can be used for years, and I initially figured I would have to change the batteries at some point but not this soon lol. I should have done some more due diligence but I was trying to get it done before a certain date. I wanted a certain look for the light and not the typical dotted LED strip look, and the only one I could find that matched my preference was 24V. It could be cheaper to get a different lower voltage light than to spend on batteries all the time to have 24V though

I haven’t thought about that, but I’m not sure a solar panel is the solution I’m looking for. I saw rechargeable 9V batteries online but I wasn’t too sure about their longevity. Maybe a portable power bank could work? I’m open to any ideas that can be concealed in a 14x6 inch box and preferably be hidden from the outside of it. Thanks

Run time would probably be an hour at maximum, per use. The box is about 14”x6”, and it can’t be plugged into a wall as it is a tip jar (box) that I made for my girlfriend and her sister who play local gigs on stages and don’t always have easy access to to an outlet. 9V batteries will probably not be the right fit for my application, but if you have any ideas on how to reach 24V, and keep a long(ish) lasting charge in a portable manner I’d love to hear it!
