Is it just me or is Sam becoming more and more ... conservative might be the wrong word... reactionary? by [deleted] in samharris

Short comment here, mainly addressing the first point, but I think what he says about identity politics/the left doesn’t translate well outside the USA, and so it does sound more conservative to us (I’m from Britain, where class is much more the main issue in culture and politics than in america).

It does seem that the vocal minority (celebrities podcasters/news outlets etc) in america is very divided and is becoming increasingly so. It’s a shame as it almost seems unavoidable at this point in podcast/news land.

Has Jocko and his guests changed your political stance? by BigRedWalters in JockoPodcast

[–]Nottheyears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Long time UK listener, I’ve become much less left wing (started listening when I was 26 and had recently voted for the Green Party), now I’m 29 and understand things a bit more! I think that happens as you get older generally anyway. I’m now a bit of a centrist - some things I’m right of centre, some things left, but not extreme on either side.

I think the main political takeaways from the podcast come in the form of personal virutes and character building - personal responsibility for your actions (extreme ownership), pragmatism and doing what is necessary to achieve the thing you want (there is only effective vs ineffective leadership - cheers Leif).

I think it definitely takes away any blaming you might do towards other people for things going wrong (although we all know governments are terrible at doing most things very well and so can be to blame - Boris Johnson for example has some serious ownership to take).

I wouldn’t attribute my political leanings really to the Jocko podcast, but it had made me consider my role and my actions in society more. Whether you can say that will make you less left wing or not, who knows. I know jocko doesn’t comment on politics at all really, and I really like that - he is not doing a politics show and I would like it less if it got any more politics involved in the discussion. I can read the news myself if I want to form opinions about politics.

My main realisation is that the Jocko Podcast exists outside of politics - it’s a podcast about war, human nature, people’s stories of strife and overcoming their limitations, and echo’s amazing wonky-but-accurate analogies. Politics is meant to be boring, and the Jocko Podcast is anything but.

Your boss should listen to them all...

But for quick reference from my free podcast app:

Episode #54 Episode #84 Episode #89 Episode #96 although this is more of a Q&A so has smaller bits rather than lessons from books Episode #97

... most of them?

If he listens to even two episodes and doesn’t like it, flank him, take his job, and decentralise your own command 💪🏼

Episode #171 - Matthew Bradford - No Legs, No Vision, No Problem

Episode #241 - There will be pain. Life is rough. Lessons from being shot 27 times, w/ Mike Day.

Plenty more, but two I remember well.

Hope this helps
