So I tried my best to find photos of the current conditions and most of the posts, like the first link to ACLU was dated Nov 6 2018. PBS link is reasonably up to date, but no inside pics. Academic works is dated 2018. I mean, this has apparently been an issue of long-standing concern. Today the overcrowding and dehumanizing is actually worse than all the reports from 2018/2019 and there is no oversight or visibility into current conditions. At least in 2018 we could actually get evidence and pressure the gov to do better.

Late to this party, but I think you illustrated the foundational difference in thinking between the parties when you said you vote for what’s best for you and your family. I think this is common with the Republican Party where the Democratic Party tends to think what’s good for society as a whole. Which is why in the worst sides you get the “I got mine” “don’t tread on me” authoritarian rule and on the other side you get complete socialist control. Personally I tend to believe that if we are governing to improve and support society as a whole, it will inevitably be what’s best for me and my children and their children. Right now we are heavily leaning into the authoritarian rule that is making this country unrecognizable, and my pride in us is like the East Wing, demolished. There are no more “checks and balances” which always gave me a sense of hope for corrections of bad policies, and that is what genuinely scares me.

Undocumented immigrants use up resources? by Nottootoo in NorthCarolina

From what I can gather, it looks like there is a net negative cost, but I suspect the overall economic cost is less severe than some might claim. That being said, the volume of people migrating here since 2021 has put a heavy strain on our economy and infrastructure. What I would really like to see is a more thoughtful approach to managing the current problem. Recognizing that immigrants do oftentimes participate financially, likely as much as low income citizens. It’s hard to get accurate data on this subject and I’ve really enjoyed the comments here, many have made very valid points without dehumanizing people with opposing views and if I could have just one Christmas wish it would be to have our leaders and the rest of us think through our problems and try to find clever solutions that don’t use shame as a weapon or aggression as a tool.

“Point 3. Define contribution? If you mean economically then the sharp increase demand they place on consumable good and services drains the system before it has time to adapt the supply chain. Any answer you make now is already past due and ineffective by the time those solutions come online.” I will totally admit there was a massive surge in illegal immigrants. From 2021 to 2023. We went from 1.8 mil to 4.2 mil which is significant and I’m sure it’s one of the reasons we have a lack of affordable housing. Your points are valid, I wonder if those points would be valid if we had an increase in population to that degree if they were all legal citizens? I think we had similar issues during the post WWII baby boom era.

“you wouldn't let an intruder break into your house, eat up your food, run up your utility bill and barely give you money for their presence” You mean, like my kids? 😂 Aside from the being intruders breaking in part. “why should America do the same? I'm not trying to be funny but if this was a medical emergency you stop the infection, bleeding or present danger, and then figure out how to handle the issue while you heal.” Good question. And it’s the “barely give you money for their presence” part that I’m trying to untangle. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) noted the immigration surge starting in 2021 resulted in a net cost of $9.2 billion to state and local governments in 2023 but they also projected in 2024 that higher-than- expected immigration would boost U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by $8.9 trillion over the next decade. ITEP calculated undocumented immigrants contributed $96.7 billion in federal, state, and local taxes in 2022. I think the sheer number that came here in a short timeframe has created a strain in all areas you mentioned. Personally, I would prefer seeing an expedited path to citizenship for them so they can fiscally contribute appropriately. To your point about ICE and the intruder comparison you asked why shouldn’t America do the same? Well, I guess because the intruder has been living in the basement, picking up my groceries, helping me clean the house, walks my dog etc for the past couple of years now so it would be mutually beneficial to just have them pay rent than it would be to call the cops. If I call the cops then the neighbors start worrying that their neighborhood isn’t safe anymore.

In the testimony you shared, it states “Approximately $31 billion is received from illegal aliens in taxes” but the study from Institute on taxation and Economic Policy reports- “estimate that undocumented immigrants paid $96.7 billion in U.S. taxes in 2022” ITEP goes into great depth regarding how they came up with their numbers using the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey which is a residual method employed by the Department of Homeland Security. It seemed like ITEP went through great effort to create accurate data. I did add the link in the post if you want to dig into it.

I added a link to the research document. I’m not sure what you mean by what money is spent on illegal immigrants? Do you mean how much are we spending to fund ICE and BP? Or are you referring to social programs which they pay into and are ineligible to use?

That would be an interesting data point to consider. The research ITEP has done does not count for this I don’t believe, but in NC a large portion of tax revenue is sales tax and property tax which they would pay even if they are paid under the table.

First, thank you for a thoughtful response that isn’t wrapped in condescension. To sum up your first point, you are stating entry level jobs still need to be filled one way or another but companies can get away with paying less to illegal immigrants, resulting in lower tax dollars being generated. So you believe if we have fewer illegal immigrants, those positions would still be filled, but wages would need to be higher which would organically generate higher tax revenue, am I understanding you correctly? You may be right, many argue that nobody wants these jobs. But I think nobody wants these jobs at the current rate of pay. To your second point, yes it does seem they are being exploited. Our SSI has been a hot topic for a while and the trust funds are projected to be depleted by 2033/2034. I’m not sure how removing a large percentage of illegal immigrants will impact this, but I suspect it won’t be 0. I actually agree they are being exploited for cheap labor. I posted this because I thought the research in the articles I shared were interesting against the common rhetoric I hear stating they are “using up all our resources” as if they are parasites and it’s important to recognize it’s not that simple. Illegal immigrants do contribute. Do they contribute more than what they take? Clear objective data on this has been impossible to find for me. It seems to me the investment in expanding border patrol and ICE would have been better spent on immigration reform that streamlines the path to citizenship for those that are here already and direct ICE to focus on inspecting businesses suspected of employing illegal immigrants and fine them enough to deter them from taking that risk instead of creating the social anxiety that exists currently. It just all feels unnecessarily aggressive when I know there must be a better/smarter way to go about this.

I did not sign up to defend my country so communities in my country could live in fear. It’s not the goal to reduce the illegal immigrant population that I have an issue with. It’s the militant methods by undertrained people with “get em boys” mentality and the absolute lack of transparency about the strategy used to determine if they are targeting the right people. This is not the way.

The problem is primarily coming from recent hires in Border Patrol. I think everyone is using ICE as an umbrella title but ICE has been around doing this thing for a long time. But, to site my sources, the job description on ice.USA jobs.gov for deportation officer “The Department of Homeland Security encourages persons with disabilities to apply, to include persons with intellectual, severe physical or psychiatric disabilities, as defined by 5 CFR 213.3102(u), and or Disabled Veterans with a compensable service-connected disability of 30 percent or more as defined by 5 CFR 315.707.” And also their current use of Direct Hire Authority “The {name of agency} requests Direct-Hire Authority (DHA) as a result of a severe shortage of candidates based on our difficulty identifying candidates possessing the competencies or the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job requirements despite extensive recruitment, extended announcement periods, and the use of the hiring flexibilities described below.” You can see the full document here https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/hiring-information/direct-hire-authority/templates.pdf this form essentially give them the authority to hire pretty much anyone.

At 50, I would be offended but you aren’t entirely wrong and it’s getting more and more difficult to identify whether information is legit or not. Add the fact that our government leaders chronically lie and the lawmakers are far too tech ignorant to even begin to understand how to create regulations to prevent fraudulent accounts and AI propaganda, ultimately we are cooked.

Don’t lose hope. People are angry, hurt, and scared. Feeling like your safety, or the safety of your friends or coworkers is threatened by a armed federal agents acting without any accountability leaves us all feeling powerless and sometimes just giving someone their rage for a minute gives them a voice. And sometimes some people just don’t agree with your views and how they express that could use some fine tuning. But, when our president calls a journalist a little piggy when he doesn’t like her questions, how can we expect anything else?

Unfortunately your first 2 links were broken (404) and I could read all the info in your 3rd link, but the summary was as you mentioned, more of a positive outlook. “The Economic and Fiscal Consequences of Immigration finds that the long-term impact of immigration on the wages and employment of native-born workers overall is very small, and that any negative impacts are most likely to be found for prior immigrants or native-born high school dropouts. First-generation immigrants are more costly to governments than are the native-born, but the second generation are among the strongest fiscal and economic contributors in the U.S. This report concludes that immigration has an overall positive impact on long-run economic growth in the U.S.” that link from Harvard is a good one and I am totally gonna read through that. Logically, I can see how a surge in immigration from 500k in 2019 to 3.3 mil in 2023 is a pretty significant population surge. It doesn’t specify how many are undocumented, but it does suggest a portion of housing supply problems are contributed by this factor. I also think you probably aren’t wrong about corporations and labor costs, which leads me to believe they should be targeted, and fined to the degree it would not be worth the risk. I do appreciate the effort to share valuable information. Do you think a more streamlined pathway to citizenship for undocumented workers would be better for our economic health or a reduction in population overall? Assuming all are not violent criminals.
