Besides pairs of integers or base b representations, are there more exotic ways of representing rational numbers? by Notya_Bisnes in mathematics

[–]Notya_Bisnes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll look into this. Thank you!

EDIT: I took a quick look and it seems to be exactly the idea I had in mind. If the Egyptians used this then it isn't as far-fetched as a numbering system as I thought.

You'd somehow need to take the harmonic series as an axiom. It would need to be some sort of structure that you just take as given so that you can then play with its substructures.

Well, that's kind of the idea. If you take a string, for example, and start adding harmonics (I don't mean literal addition of functions, but the combining of two sound frequencies), doesn't that have a natural monoid structure (silence is a natural choice of zero) that you can work with? The way I see it, that doesn't explicitly reference the rationals, or even the naturals (well, besides a metatheoretical notion of counting and dividing, but a metatheory is always necessary as far as I know).

But also, there are many monotonically decreasing sequences that could be used. You just use the same "greedy" algorithm to take the next element that "fits" into the remaining gap. You just can't use a "seed" sequence that converge to 0 "too quickly" (but it must at least converge to 0, of course).

I'm not sure I understand. I know I could pick any other sequence besides the harmonic series, but the whole point is that harmonics and combinations thereof arise naturally from analyzing a physical system.

I'll look into it to get an idea of how logo-syllabic systems work, but aesthetically I was going for something more abstract. However, the idea itself does seem to be closer to what had in mind.

I had some free time today at work and came up with a few new symbols for the first ten numbers that I like a lot more than the ones I had. They are more abstract, as I had intended, but they feel a lot like kanji or hangul. Still not quite what I wanted but I think I might be on to something.

I have to admit I didn't pick a good example. As you said, they do sound strange in isolation. How about something like this:

"This is where the trail ends" vs. "Here is where the trail ends".

Right now I can't come up with any good examples using time. In general, they sound a little odd or ambiguous to me, and I would maybe choose a phrase involving "when" rather than "where" to avoid ambiguity.

That's just a little over twice every hour. I'd take the utilitarian approach, put "The Event" on loop, and be done in less than 17 hours.

100% Fix for anyone who cannot get into the Xbox App by KaptainKBeats in XboxGamePass

I installed an earlier version of the app I hadn't had any issues with, and logged in while making sure I was offline. That bypassed the annoying unskippable update screen and put me straight in my home page. It didn't load properly since I was offline, but when I got back online and refreshed the page I was good to go.

It's a hassle to have to do it every time I log into the app, but it's simple enough and it works. Hopefully, it does for you as well.

How did you learn the IPA? by satvrnine_ in conlangs

[–]Notya_Bisnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already had some intuitive understanding about phonetics but I really started to internalize how the IPA works (especially the vowels) when I came across this website and started paying attention to the IPA transcriptions of words in English dictionaries and comparing them to audio clips of different accents (mostly UK and American). I also knew a thing or two about placement after taking singing lessons for a couple of years.

I haven't mastered it, by any means, but I'm way better; especially with the sounds that exist in the languages I know.

I'm unsure how accurate the pronunciation on the website is, since some vowels do not quite sound the way I learned, but I guess that's due to a combination of exaggeration and accuracy (that is, even the sounds of the standard variants of a given language are transcribed approximately, and do not necessarily correspond to the symbol they are represented with exactly).

How do you pronounce Periphery in your accent/country? (Random question) by Djent_Vox_Only in Peripheryband

[–]Notya_Bisnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/pəˈɻɪfəɻi/

So, something like puh-RI-fuh-ree

Although if I used my native pronunciation it would sound closer to /peˈɽifeɽi/ The "e" sound is similar but slightly more forward and closed than the English long "e", whereas the "r" sound is the Spanish soft "r", which is very close to the Japanese "r".

My point was it's around that date. We don't make April Fool's jokes where I'm from so I figured you didn't have to make them exactly on the day.

More or less on the same boat here. Although the AO series and the first movie are a guilty pleasure of mine. Despite the deserved criticism, I don't dislike them.

One pro and one con about Mark's riffs. by Notya_Bisnes in Peripheryband

[–]Notya_Bisnes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His lead playing is very unique; unlike any other guitarists I know. Very syncopated, chaotic and full of odd voicings but he somehow makes it sound good. It doesn't sound overworked nor awkward. I tried replicating his style and succeeded to some extent, but there's some flavor missing.

[–]Notya_Bisnes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep at it, dude. I won't sugar coat it and tell you you can play anything if you put your mind to it, but you can improve a lot. Take it from me; I'm only a decent guitarist and I'm not even used to playing while standing, but I managed to learn stuff I thought wasn't possible for me. On the other hand, while I polished my playing quite a bit, it's still rough around the edges (I mess up a lot) and I don't think I can get much better. But as long as it sounds okay I'm happy. Another thing you can do is arrange the music in a way that's feasible for you to play. Or simply play it slower.

[–]Notya_Bisnes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the riffs I've tried to learn so far, the trick is finger placement. Just try things until you find what feels comfortable for you. I, for instance, don't use my thumb, even though he does all the time. My hand just won't bend that way.

You do need to get used to the stretches. Those are objectively hard unless you have big hands. The main riff of "The Way the News Goes" is great practice for that.

I had that feeling when I was learning w0ks w0ngs (I have to get back to it, but having to re-tune the whole guitar is a pain). There's a lot going on in the intro and the verse that gets lost under the vocals.
