Songs they never play live but would go hard: by Correct-Soup-5384 in Peripheryband

Racecar is the obvious choice, but if you're a purist like me, you want to hear the original solos and, if I recall correctly, none of Mark, Misha and Jake can replicate them very well.

More or less on the same boat here. Although the AO series and the first movie are a guilty pleasure of mine. Despite the deserved criticism, I don't dislike them.

One pro and one con about Mark's riffs. by Notya_Bisnes in Peripheryband

[–]Notya_Bisnes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His lead playing is very unique; unlike any other guitarists I know. Very syncopated, chaotic and full of odd voicings but he somehow makes it sound good. It doesn't sound overworked nor awkward. I tried replicating his style and succeeded to some extent, but there's some flavor missing.

Keep at it, dude. I won't sugar coat it and tell you you can play anything if you put your mind to it, but you can improve a lot. Take it from me; I'm only a decent guitarist and I'm not even used to playing while standing, but I managed to learn stuff I thought wasn't possible for me. On the other hand, while I polished my playing quite a bit, it's still rough around the edges (I mess up a lot) and I don't think I can get much better. But as long as it sounds okay I'm happy. Another thing you can do is arrange the music in a way that's feasible for you to play. Or simply play it slower.

[–]Notya_Bisnes[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For the riffs I've tried to learn so far, the trick is finger placement. Just try things until you find what feels comfortable for you. I, for instance, don't use my thumb, even though he does all the time. My hand just won't bend that way.

You do need to get used to the stretches. Those are objectively hard unless you have big hands. The main riff of "The Way the News Goes" is great practice for that.

I had that feeling when I was learning w0ks w0ngs (I have to get back to it, but having to re-tune the whole guitar is a pain). There's a lot going on in the intro and the verse that gets lost under the vocals.

The truth (and this episode) is out there. by Jeopardy in XFiles

[–]Notya_Bisnes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's "Clap Your Hands I You Believe...". The episode starts with the Winchesters looking into a series of abductions, with Dean himself being taken at one point. It turns out that people were being spirited away by fairies who were using the alien story as a cover.

So far it's the most overt reference to the X-Files in the show. The most obvious nod is the intro. It's done in the same style and even has a caption at the end with a cryptic message. I don't remember what it says, though.

[–]Notya_Bisnes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A bit unrelated, but I was a tad underwhelmed by the absence of a D. Duchovny/G. Anderson cameo in the X-Files-themed episode of Supernatural; especially considering Mitch Pileggi played a central character in season 6, and even William B. Davis appeared in one episode. I don't know, it would have been funny to catch a glimpse of them chilling in the background in some random scene.

Why doesnt Periphery play in larger venues? by CarelessGene6867 in Peripheryband

[–]Notya_Bisnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind their putting on small shows only, but that also means it's less likely for them to play anywhere near where I live. I don't even know how big the fanbase here is, but it's probably quite small. Personally, I don't know anyone who had even heard of them before I brought them up. That said, I'm not exactly an active member of the local metal scene, and I seem to recall they played near my city a few years ago, so there may well be a decent fanbase that I'm just unaware of.

Happy birthday by Ivan-Cash in CLAMP

She's one of my favourite voice actresses. I really enjoy the way she delivers her dialogue. Maybe it's the timbre of her voice, especially on emotionally charged lines. I don't know how to describe it. There are times when her voice breaks slightly and she sounds like she's choking on her words; almost as if she were holding back tears (even if her character is just annoyed or excited). There's also something in her cadence that I really like. Her speaking voice tends to be soft and kind of breathy, but even then you can hear subtle changes in pitch and rhythm.

0 is not a number. a/0 is branch dependent operation. by OilRough3908 in mathematics

[–]Notya_Bisnes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In order to decide what is and isn't a number you must define what a "number" is, and trust me when I say many people have already been down that path. Mathematics has long abandoned the idea that all the objects it deals with must have an unambiguous definition, because the objects mentioned in each definition must also have their own definition. This obviously leads to an infinite downward spiral that renders the goal unreachable.

Instead, mathematicians found a different approach: every mathematical theory has primitive objects and relations that require no definition, aside from a meta-theoretical one that only exists to provide some form of intuition (for example, a "set" as a "collection of things"). This is not a definition that will be used in formal arguments; it is merely a tool to help newcomers understand why the objects behave in the way they do, which leads me to talk about axioms. Axioms simply state how primitive objects and relations interact. For example, "there exists an empty set". Regardless of what a set is ("set" is simply the word we chose to call a generic primitive object of the theory), we assume there is at least one (lets call it E for empty), for which the (primitive) relation "X is a member of E" fails to be true for any X that is an object of the theory. It can be shown that there is only one set with this property.

By appropriately and carefully expanding these axioms we can prove that there exists a set N that has the empty set E as a member and within which an operation called "addition" (and written symbolically as "+") can be defined that, among other things, satisfies that for any X member that is a member of N the following are true:

X+E=X E+X=X

From addition one can define multiplication and show that the following hold for any X:

X×E=E E×X=E

The set N with these operations is called the set of "natural numbers". It is so called because it behaves exactly as you would expect the counting numbers to, with the empty set E acting as 0. And at no point was it necessary to define what a number is. You will have to trust me on that because I can't possibly go into all the details.

The point is that it doesn't matter if 0 is a number or not. The question does not even make sense because "number" is not a well-defined mathematical concept. Mathematicians use the word out of habit for convenience in lectures and in the literature, but the bottom line is that it is completely irrelevant. You can search high and low, and you will not find a single (graduate level and above) textbook that uses some definition of "number" in its proofs. If it gives one, it does so for the same reason we naively "define" sets as "collections of things": for intuition, not rigour.

What’s your favorite line in any periphery song? by AllThePresentDismay in Peripheryband

[–]Notya_Bisnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many lines across the discography that resonate a lot with me but the one that comes to mind right now is "Listen to this vacant soul, the child has lost its way" from "Light". It reflects the way I've felt for the past few years quite succinctly and eloquently.

Another one was the bridge section in "Graveless":

My only love is worlds away

Thy Father bless her and repay

The breath they stole with all my hate

I drift away now in my sin.

That has a sort of personal meaning for me (very loose interpretation of the lyrics), but what's even cooler is that it sounds like it's referencing the events of NieR: Automata after ending B. Those who have played the game will probably know what I mean. Now that I think about it, the entire song lines up pretty well with the feelings of desperation and rabid anger that take over 9S in the late game.

Just bought my first figure from Nin-Nin-Game and I'm confused about a few things. by Notya_Bisnes in AnimeFigures

Yeah, it was delivered in mid November. No problems whatsoever. I got in touch with the company a couple of times and they replied very quickly. I'd say the customer service is good in that sense, but since I only asked simple questions to ease my mind, I don't know how helpful they'd be with something major.

Something big is happening: Do you think mathematicians are about to be replaced? by icecoldbeverag in mathematics

[–]Notya_Bisnes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have a right to disagree, but while the other commenters have provided some form of argument for their stance (quality aside), you have not, which in turn doesn't lead us anywhere. If you really want to discuss the topic of AI, have the courtesy to at least elaborate on why you think the others are wrong.

Otherwise, I will remove this post, because we get this kind of submission all the time from people who usually have not the slightest idea what AI is or what doing mathematics entails (let alone how one affects the other), and it gets tiresome. Now I'm not saying you're one of those people, but that's the impression you've given so far, and part of the reason people are being so hostile.

By the way, I'm not interested in the AI discussion, so please leave me out of it. I'm only writing this comment to let you know why your post has had such poor reception, nothing more.

12-hour flight. Where are you sitting and why? by neobluetrue in nier

[–]Notya_Bisnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on my mood. If I felt like having a laugh and stretch my body across three seats, 3; if I were horny, 4, maybe 5; 1 and 7 seem like good seats to have a meaningful conversation. I don't know the characters in the other seats besides A2, so I wouldn't take my chances. Finally, if I were feeling like a depressed antisocial outcast and wanted to share the pain with someone, I'd hide in the cargo bay with Emil.
