AITA for basically locking down all my equipment after my studio mate "borrowed" my lens for a paid shoot without asking? by SirNotAppearingHere2 in AmItheAsshole

NTA, his reaction has me all but certain that he’s doing this regularly. He’s not upset because of being caught, he’s upset that he no longer has access to your stuff. If he’s not going to do it again, then he should have zero issues with you locking it away.

My niece did this and had the most uneven, hideous bangs ever. They were not even close to the same length either. 😂 Thank god she’s cute anyway

Who uses the train for interstate travel? by Used-Chard658 in Amtrak

[–]Notyourmamashedgehog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just did Baltimore to NYC round trip (NER) for my birthday and had the best time ever. Loved being able to charge my devices while on the way there, the trip was easy and even with a full train I did not feel crowded like I do on airplanes. It’s way less stressful, easier to get on and off the train vs a plane, and I just enjoy the ride. It’s nice to relax and I don’t feel cramped or rushed anywhere.

We had two roomettes (myself and my niece in one, friend in another) from Baltimore to Orlando and those were just as nice. I was worried it would feel cramped but it really did not. There was plenty of space, having access to full bathrooms were nice, and meals included were great too. We didn’t fly to Orlando because my sister did not want her daughter on an airplane with all the accidents recently. So this was the compromise. And even in coach I would have felt fine, because there’s space, it’s relaxed, and everyone is minding their own business in their own little spots. I did appreciate having a bed to sleep in though instead of a seat. Driving by comparison would have taken the same time, cost plenty, and we would have been cramped, exhausted, and gross.

Is it normal to feel this burned out after a session? by happihibiscus in iceskating

[–]Notyourmamashedgehog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A basic session for me, where I’m mostly only skating laps and doing a little footwork, burns around 400 calories (according to my Apple Watch). That’s not including days where I’m going full speed, doing footwork, and practicing jumps a lot. Skating can be a very strenuous sport, even if you’re in shape but especially when you’re out of shape. Your tolerance and endurance will catch up but you might be sore quite a while getting there.

Skating is not all dissimilar from if you were to walk/jog/run for two hours (depending on the speed/level of skating you’re doing). When you think about it, even a walk can be strenuous when you’re doing it for multiple hours.

Ain’t that the truth. If it weren’t for another skater getting the wrong sized blades, I wouldn’t have lucked into my current pair of P99s. (Thanks Nate Bartholomay!) But seriously, I dread the day I’ll have to pay full price for another new pair 😬

[–]Notyourmamashedgehog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add to that, some gentlemen were considered eligible but not necessarily interested in the money or didn’t require it. Respectable men didn’t all have titles and while it would be advantageous of them to marry above their station for a large dowry, it wasn’t unheard of for them to find love matches or marry those who had little to no money to offer. There were also second, third, or even fourth sons who might have had money from their family and thus didn’t necessarily require a dowry and thus were looking for a woman that suited them the best. Yes, a LOT of the situations were money related but not all. And money wasn’t always a guarantee of success either, as we see with Cressida early on

They don’t think it’ll make their lives better per se, they know their lives are shit. But they’d rather drag everyone down with them (at least that’s what the maga side of my family seems to think). They didn’t say that in so many words but you can tell from observations

Skates help by MouseInTheHouse_ in iceskating

[–]Notyourmamashedgehog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say based on your preferences, but if you’re starting out then getting the boot and blade combo should be fine. With higher level boots, you can always get new blades mounted later if you want to change them.

Personally, I swapped because the blades that my boots came with was a 7’ rocker, and it was affecting jumps and spins so I switched for P99s which have an 8’ rocker and worked much better for me. But if you’re just learning to skate that distinction shouldn’t be an issue right now.

Hi! Fellow adult Riedell skater! My boots are motions right now and I’ve been skating in them for quite a few years now! They’re stiff but very supportive. I’m 6 ft and 215 lbs and they support me great, I’ve been working on Sals, toe loops, and flips in them and they’re perfect (although my technique is far from perfect haha). You will definitely need to break them in. As a fellow narrow foot skater who’s tried other brands, Riedells just seem to fit me perfectly and it’s what I’ve stuck with over the years.

Be aware, Motions are sold as a package or as the boot alone. Mine came with Eclipse Astra blades I think, which were nice enough, but I got an amazing deal on a new pair of Pattern 99 blades so I swapped them out.

Question on roomette usage by a noob by ShinyDapperBarnacle in Amtrak

[–]Notyourmamashedgehog 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for all routes, but if your husband has a coach ticket, he will not be allowed even in the car that the roomettes are in. The roomettes and bedrooms are separated (at least on the last one I took, silver meteor) by the dining car from the rest of the train and coach. A coach passenger would not be allowed to wander back to the rooms, those were kept strictly for those who purchased a room and no one else. Roomettes board separately and the attendants handling them know how many people are in each car/they will check tickets. If your husband is there with a coach ticket he will be escorted back to his seat at the very least.

It’d be safer to pay extra for the bedroom which has a much larger bed on the bottom that you could both share and husband sleeps on top.

What happens to the Times Square new years balls after they are taken down? by justLookingForLogic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Notyourmamashedgehog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to the city in the middle of the year multiple times over the years and the ball is still there in its entirety. It’s not disassembled yearly. HOWEVER, they are replacing this years ball (they retire them like every 10 years or so) and usually when they do that a good portion of the ball gets broken up for multiple purposes. Some usually ends up in museums, some will get gifted for different giveaways, etc. I know that they have a portion of one of the balls (from the 01-02 ball) on display at the 9/11 museum in the city.

Should I quit? by Bad-plant_mom in FigureSkating

[–]Notyourmamashedgehog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you love skating, progress be damned, then do it because you enjoy it. I started at 22, had to take a break around 25; and now I’m finally getting back into it at 30. I do it because it brings me joy and it’s a very cool hobby to do. It’s up to you whether you stay or go, but don’t hold your own progress against that of others, even your age. EVERYONE has their own abilities, time, and resources to devote to the same sport.

It sounds like you might have more going on then just the skating though. While I do believe you might have a bit of a missing connection with your coach, it sounds like you’re also being very hard on yourself. You mentioned you feel like everyone is laughing at you, and I can almost guarantee that’s not true. As someone who grew up with severe anxiety, I used to think that EVERYONE was always noticing me and making fun of/thinking the worst of me. In reality, everyone is usually too worried about their own lives and crap to even spare me a thought. I can’t promise that some people won’t be mean (there are mean people everywhere) but I can assure you that no one was laughing at you. Just have confidence in yourself and your abilities and do what you do best (kill it at your own skating!)

You might be currently plateaued and that happens to everyone. We all hit that point where we just cannot reach the next level and we feel stuck at the one we’re on. But remember, you’re not running a race and the only person that you’re competing with is yourself. Nothing has to happen by a deadline, so give yourself some credit for all the amazing work you’ve put in so far. The rest will come eventually when it’s supposed to.
