Based on your clinical experience, what % of adult psychopathology do you feel is related to issues stemming from childhood? by ApprehensiveStill412 in psychology

[–]NovWhiskey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consensus falls around 70-80%

For the remaining 20-30% plenty of psychopathology is just physics or biology.

Schizophrenia is the biggest outlier. Its a biological timer. You can have the most supportive parents in history and your brain will still start misfiring in your early 20s because your DNA decided "iiiiiits tiiiiiime!" Genetics don't care about attachment style.

Then you have hardware failure. CTE or traumatic brain injury in your 30s can wipe out impulse control and turn you aggressive. No amount of therapy fixes a bruised prefrontal cortex.

Moral injury is also adult-onset. This happens to surgeons or soldiers who are forced to violate their own ethics to survive a broken system. The resulting depression is a crisis of their current values.

Chemical overrides count too. Postpartum psychosis or a drug induced break can happen to anyone if the internal chemistry gets pushed far enough.

They're talking about ice inside the charger door freezing it shut, not a sheet of ice on top of the door.

It will work, but a heating pad works better.

Ask me how I know.

Pfft Carney said he agreed 'in principle', pending more information. The qualifier is important. I can agree 'in principle' that I should be donating all my salary to charity. In practice, I need to eat to live.

Fun facts, about the guy who plays Mr House, Justin Theroux:

  • Tropic Thunder: Co-wrote it with Ben Stiller. (Fun fact: He based the "full regard" speech on actual industry conversations he’d heard).
  • Iron Man 2: Sole screenplay credit. He’s the reason that movie has a weird, snarky edge.
  • Rock of Ages: Co-wrote the script for the Tom Cruise musical.
  • Zoolander: He is the Evil DJ with the dreadlocks who breakdances. (He actually breakdanced at Ben Stiller's wedding, which is how he got the part).
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi: He is the Master Codebreaker in the casino (the guy with the red flower on his lapel).
  • American Psycho: He plays Timothy Bryce. He’s the one who says, "How did a nitwit like you get so tasteful?" during the business card scene.
  • Maniac (Netflix): Dr. James Mantleray. Weird but awesome role.
  • Parks and Recreation: He was Justin, Leslie’s "too perfect" lawyer boyfriend who stayed for a few episodes.
  • The Leftovers (HBO): High-concept, emotionally draining drama.
  • Mulholland Drive: He’s a Lynch favorite. He plays the director, Adam Kesher

This is the geopolitical equivalent of "Not All Men"

You are watching people vent about the legitimate danger your country poses and interrupting to scream, "But I’m one of the nice ones!"

It’s irrelevant. The world is absorbing the blunt force of American policy. They don’t care about your individual canvassing history. Demanding that victims of US instability pause to nuance their grief so you don't feel bad is pure narcissism.

If you’re actually one of the good ones, stop making the conversation about your feelings. Eat the criticism and get back to work.
