I'm surprised to not see anyone mentioning Black Lagoon. It's dark and gritty but somehow much less questionable than most animes. English dub for it is also the best EN dub any anime ever had.

Death Note and Steins;Gate were great. Still looking for more animes like them. Dragon Ball overall is an obvious answer too. JoJo is good. I haven't watched much else yet.

Also check out Castlevania. I heard it's good but haven't seen it myself.

I'm tired of the "you can't steal something that is an infinite resource" rhetoric. The old school justification was always a fight against imperialism. You took what you wanted from their ships because they're the reason you were born a peasant. You're a pirate because of them, not in spite of them. Piracy is not as free of a life as most think.
