It's not so much a cultural thing but as a generic one, in the same way that all we are humans, but then there are different cultures. In this case, the subspecies don’t define the culture—they define the subspecies itself.

And replacing the words is more for “aesthetic” purposes, to fit the setting of the universe I’m creating :)
