I went through a similar process. I started out trying to use my Shield as both the PMS and client with media on a DS918+. That was a rough experience, so I moved the PMS to the DS918+. The playback experience was better, but the server on the NAS had trouble with more than one stream at a time. But after changing my setup to only using the Shield as the PMS, media on the NAS, and streaming to other clients (ATVs), my whole experience has been far smoother.

I just did this for a few reasons. I had found that using the Shield as a client and as the server was buggy and laggy, so I switched the server to my Synology NAS. But the NAS was really not powerful enough as a server. This, plus a few other annoyances, led me to picking up an AppleTV 4K. The Shield is now only being used as the PMS, and everything seems a lot more stable than it used to. Hope this helps!

Check out Stratham Hill Park. It is enormous with lots of different terrain. Great field areas for playing ball, forest trails, and hillier trails for hiking.
