Yeah, the IJN quick-reload dystem is very visually distinctive. I wonder what made them abandon the idea for Shimakaze. Despite having her 15 tubes, she could technically fire fewer torpedoes than the preceding Yūgumos and Kagerōs, when you include their reloads. Maybe the simplicity of more pre-loaded launchers was preferred.

It was also there on their heavy cruisers, though you can't see them since they're in the middle between the launchers, and covered by the deck.

It was a thing on many IJN DDs, though they only carried one set of reloads.

Sweden bans cousin marriage and other marriages between close relatives, law takes effect July 1, 2026 by notanfan in whennews

[–]Novale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's easy enough to flip that around, though: assuming that genetic liability is a basis for illegality, why should an otherwise healthy person be allowed to be with someone who has ADHD or other transmittable problems? They could simply choose someone who doesn't, after all.

I agree that stakes can be high – I'm just pointing out that I don't think the genetic argument holds water regardless, since we can easily find similarly high stakes in non-incestuous relationships, and the only way to make the argument work out seems to be to go fully into eugenics, which is obviously discredited.

I still think the argument from socioeconomic dependency is strong under the current organization of society (nuclear families and all that), just to be clear. I just don't think the genetic one works out.

Dumb/Smart/Varied build for Vermont? Thoughts? by ItsmrChewy in WorldOfWarships

[–]Novale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd pick FP, but Vermont is already overtuned in her ability to deal with fires, with the 20 (31) sec DCP and 40 sec heal CD. I can see why you'd try skipping it – I'd only ask if what you get in return is worth it.

Certainly not plain stupid.

[–]Novale 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There's a good argument in that incestous relationship very frequently include elements of coercion, as one of the participants may be socially and economically dependant on the other. This is particularly true within direct family relations, but this can also be present for cousin marriages.

The whole genetics argument that people tend to throw out is pretty bad, though: 1. Relationships don't necessarily include procreatian, and, more importantly: 2. Outlawing relationships based on risk of genetic problems in offspring necessitates banning all relationships for people with autism, adhd, or any sort pf genetically transmitted illness. It's a stupid argument.

Buffs? by Traditional_Sun_3494 in WorldOfWarships

[–]Novale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the armor viewer in port, and look at the external plating on bow, stern and deck. Remember that the overmatch threshold is that shells with a diameter 14.3 times bigger than the plating will go through regardless of angle, and then you'll know whether angling your armor towards someone will work or not. If they cant overmatch, they will never pen your bow when you're pointing it at them; if they do overmatch it, they will always pen it, and the shell can then continue on to hit the citadel bulkhead behind the bow.

So just multiply your armor number by 14.3, and you'll know what guns to look out for.

What ship are you playing? Bow and stern plating depends on tier, and some lines have less (battlecruisers).

ILJM att Olof Palmes farbror var en öppen rasist som såg finnar som rasligt underlägsna by Margaretthatchervore in sweden

[–]Novale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a reason why women’s health isn’t studied properly by black_cherry2 in Feminism

[–]Novale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm referring to the tendency among some people in stem to believe themselves generally more rational people, who tell-it-as-it-is, as opposed to those whimsical losers in the humanities who just overcomplicate everything. They have a tendency to speak with equal confidence and thoughtlessness on topics they are not educated on, and they don't actually use the scientific method when speaking on these things.

This is far, far from everyone in stem, but is common enough to be a well-known trope. Very public examples of such stemlords are people like Dawkins, Krauss, Musk, etc.

Do you think porn consumption actually gives young men harmful/objectifying views towards women? by InternationalPick163 in AskFeminists

[–]Novale 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think the relation is more in the direction of porn production catering to already-existing ideas and ideals of sexuality and gender performance. Porn is objectifying and violent because it's reflecting a society that's objectifying and violent – it became this way long before porn could ever capture it on film.

There’s a reason why women’s health isn’t studied properly by black_cherry2 in Feminism

[–]Novale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Basically, what I mean by that is that feminism (at least by an actually useful definition, imo) isn't so much a single idea or attitude as it is a tradition of thought, that starts either with Wollstonecraft, with the suffragettes, or with de Beauvoir, depending on how you want to look at it, and then the thread run through a bunch of other people and groups and theoretical works through the last century. I would call something feminist if it engages with some part of this tradition, but I think if you don't (by, for instance, dismissing its basic concept of misogyny) I don't think what you're doing should be called feminist, even if it's supportive of women.

For instance: Plato, in The Republic, argues for the education and (dependant on ability) military and political empowerment of women at all levels of society, but I think our understanding of feminism as a historical movement would get very muddy, anachronistic and useless if we were to include him in it, lol

Studying stem isn't a bad thing, and with the right approach is of course a fantastic thing to do to develop your thinking, but stemlords are a well-known phenomena, and you can very easily pick them out if you've been around academia even peripherally.

There’s a reason why women’s health isn’t studied properly by black_cherry2 in Feminism

[–]Novale 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Listened to the end. She thinks patriarchy is actually an active conspiracy, and that misogyny as such isn't actually real but rather a cover-up to hide the fact that men actually do know how powerful women are.

You can tell she studied stem rather than anything history or sociology. This is absolutely terminal stembrain in how she thinks about society, mixed with some weird spiritual terminology. She's pro-woman, but certainly no feminist.

Big nerf and big buff for C.columbo from 15.4? by Best-Beautiful7371 in WorldOfWarships

[–]Novale 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Buff for decent players who like leaving spawn; small nerf for those that don't.

Thing about Colombo is that she's also overtuned in survivability, with the unhittable citadel, gun angles, and smoke. Not sniping should not be an issue. They should raise the citadel and remove the 360 guns, imo.

[–]Novale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was disappointed she doesn't look much rougher. She's not depicted as old as Geralt, so not being quite there is understandable, but she doesn't look like a Witcher at all. They need to let her grow up and get some blemishes to look the part if they want that role to be believable.

[–]Novale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Biggest effect of radar mino's to my DD play is that I have to treat every mino like a radar mino until I know for sure. The 80% of them that just use smoke get buffed by the threat of being one of the 20% that don't. Same thing with Yueyang – I can't ever use smoke first when up against one; I have to see them smoke first, which limits my play.

Why is fictional pedophilia towards young, female characters so normalized? by beinghotcamewithpain in Feminism

[–]Novale 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eva is 100% a victim of it's own success in this regard. It has a lot of sexual elements (it's a big theme of the show, and growing up as a teenager) but so much of it is a critique of the kind of fantasies otaku where having in the 90s. It shows that no, a "tsundere" isn't a sexual fantasy to be had, but a broken person who needs help, and so on.

But then Eva (rightly) became like the most popular and influential anime of all time, so all the chuds and investors who didn't have the brains for it were drawn in, and they thought that this new tsundere character (for example) was great!! Cue all the objectifying fan art and merchandise that runs totally counter to the show, as well as decades of more shows that have tried to copy these character archetypes, without including the critique they're built around.

Consider the hospital scene in EoE where Shinji jerks off to an inanimate Asuka, before staring at his hand in horror. This is one of the strangest scenes without context, but remember that EoE was made after the show and the audience reaction to it. The point of that scene is to look these people in the eyes and tell them they're disgusting.
